You're likely thinking of the Base Set unlimited. Which, even "crumpled" and significantly damaged, would be worth at least $150. "Good shape" would be worth at least $500, "near mint" closer to $1k. At that point it's more about its grading potential, which involves things beyond condition like picture centering and sharpness of the corners.
A crumpled and damaged shadowless would still be worth several hundred dollars. Can we see a pic of what you got?

Even worse, scalpers have backdoor deals with workers at the sketchier places like Dollar General/Dollar Tree. I asked someone about pokemon cards at Dollar General and he said to be honest he hasn't seen them and would be surprised if they ever "made it off the truck into the store."
The scalpers have their own (paid) discord to follow around the shipping trucks and clear out the stores as soon as they stop. It's like a virgin mafia.

Got into it this year via my wife, probably more or less developed from our cabin fever from having a baby in January :lol:
I was pretty into it as a kid, Silver was my first game so I've gravitated towards the vintage cards of the first two generations. She goes more for the art collecting aspect, aiming to collect every card with illustrations from certain artists like Yuka Morii or Shinji Kanda.
I actually just pulled the Lugia and Charizard from the 30th set last week. Went to a card show yesterday and was told I should probably send the Lugia in for grading, it's centered pretty well. Not sure what I'd be getting into with the grading market, though. That's an entirely different beast.

Aside from that, you’d have to make the tariffs really, really high to make them worthwhile. That’s one of the problems that Trump’s tariffs already face. These companies are paying these factory workers in third world shitholes at most 1/10 as much as they’d have to pay US workers. So you’d have to make the tariffs like at least 1,000% in order to bring factory labor home, maybe something like 700% if you take into account the cost of shipping the goods. And for call centers, the businesses don’t have to take shipping costs into account.
