Eh, it's not free if you're expected to pay for the person behind you. Actually it could be more expensive if the people behind you have a larger order
Pay for whatever you're able to, move on, and be thankful that somebody wanted to make a nice gesture.

Makes too much sense for the mouth breathers on this board. The only reason they feel pressured to pay is because they know it's the right thing to do, but they're cheap assholes.

It's never happened to me, but if it does, I'm not going to pay for the car behind me immediately. I'll just wait until a completely random time in the future to "pay it forward". That way there's no pressure, and you feel like you're doing a good thing for someone for the right reason.

This happened to me once when I let someone cut in front of me in line. I did it to reduce traffic backing up not to be nice.
I took it as them saying thanks for letting me cut so I didn’t pay it forward.

Seems like you wouldn't have to wait for someone to do it for you if that's the case

People need to go donate twenty dollars to Saint Jude
Wrong. The CEO of St. Jude's had a total compensation package of $15.9 million in 2009, due to stock options. He apparently also did that in 2008 for $29.? million.
I will protect my $20 from this fricking pirate and you should stop suggesting people give him their money.

It's the dumbest of nice actions in my book. People need to go donate twenty dollars to Saint Jude after they eat their breakfast sandwich rather than pay for someone else's overpriced coffee or breakfast.
I pay for the person behind me at Starbucks maybe once a month.
I also donate to charities throughout the year including St. Jude.
How can you tell someone else how to spend their money?
Of all the things to get butthurt over this isn’t it.
ETA
In no way are you obligated to pay for the person behind you.
Majority of the times it’s happened to me I tell the cashier thanks & pay it forward later in the week.
I have never had a cashier ask if I wanted to pay for the person behind me.

I was in college and the cfa on vets opened for maybe a month.
Person in front of me paid for my meal. I was going to pay for the next person, but it was either a large family or a party because the total was close to 80.
I left without paying it forward, couldn't afford that.

I've paid for a random person once and it was an old man with a WW2 veteran cap on, eating alone in IHOP. I asked the waitress to give me his ticket and paid on the way out.

This has happened a lot since moving from the south. When dealing with these situations, follow this net profit winning strategy:
1) Ask how much his/her meal cost behind you
2) Offer a 50% discount
3) You don't look like as big of an a-hole to the coffee lady, you made a profit, and the person behind you is still grateful.

ridiculous to pay for someones fricking nasty arse fast food. Just as ridiculous to buy cigarettes for the person behind you at the smoke shop.

If someone really wants to make a kind gesture towards me, I'd much rather have my bar tab paid.

When I go to the drive thru, I tell the cashier "The car behind me offered to pay for it"
Posted on 12/17/17 at 11:37 am to rintintin
quote:This is the only option I would ever consider.
I pulled up, the drive thru girl was like "the person in front of you covered your order."
Me: "wow awesome", and drove off.

Perfect example of how messed up our world has become !!
Geez, when someone has the heart to do something nice for you at least say thank you. In this case think it because the person isn't there. Pay it forward when possible. C'mon man

Had only heard of this until one day I was a passenger with a co-worker who had someone ahead pay for us. He tells the cashier how nice that was and he would pull back around, come in and pay for a couple of cars behind him but at the counter. He pulls around, keeps trucking and gives me a smirk... "that will bottleneck the drive-thru for a solid 5 minutes before they know what's happening."

What? Nobody is forcing them to pay for the person behind them. Just accept it a and move on with your free meal

What do you do when Chickfila gives you your meal for free? I've had it happen probably 3-4 times in recent years.
"Good afternoon, have we paid for your meal lately?"
Uh.. What? No?
"Oh well here you go! Have a great day!"
