Am I missing something?

I'm talking about companies that are use-it or lose-it. We have several guys that may take 3-4 days a year but have 4 weeks available. I'm dedicated but damn.

2018 has 261 calendar working days.

I'm going to enjoy every one of my vacation days, preferably 60' under clear water.

My company doesn't allow us to carry over any unused PTO into the new year - which is bull shite - so I make sure to take off the last two weeks in December. Screw them.

ETA: My boss always gets pissy when I go negative in the beginning of the year because of my taking off 4 days for Mardi Gras to go back to visit the fam and party. I try to explain to him that it isn't my fault that I don't have the hours. If the company would let us roll over hours, I wouldn't be going negative. We start every year with 0. So stupid.

Their job is a “vacation” away from their shitty lives. No PTO needed.

I work with a few guys like that. They don’t have a family so they just work and spend their time and money on other things.

I always take all of mine.

My old company would let you cash them out though up to 1 week per year.

I've got about 150 hours of vacation banked but I still manage to take 1-2 days a month off and a true 5+ day vacation every 6 months.

Life is short and I don't want to spend my entire young life in an office.

If you can't roll it over, then of course take it.

But thanks to Obama's bullshite I now have no ceiling on my accrual, and my employer is going to pay me for unused vacation when I'm done here.

I don't use all of mine most years... but they roll over from year to year until I max out at 3 or 4 years worth of accumulation.

I do not ever intend to max out.

I'm off by design every other Friday..........and try to take the other Friday's off as frequently as possible during the year.....and 1-2 vacations (local stuff) sprinkled within. I enjoy my job, but I enjoy a lot of other stuff way more.

We have a few that don't use all of theirs (we are use it or lose it). They are broke most of the time and can't afford a vacation. And I guess they could care less about taking days off and sitting around their shitty apartment.

Yea but you get longer bottom time on a 60' reef than a 150' rig.

For the guys that hate their wives, you can still take of for a round of golf. I don't mind my job but anything beats the hell out of working for free.

I’m banking all mine until I hit “use it or lose it” status.

Part of it is poor company culture to where people suffer for taking vacations. There aren't good systems in place to delegate workload when people are out. I try to make sure everyone knows when I'm going to be gone, prepare things in advance, and delegate to make sure there's no fires that come up while I'm out or that there's not a mountain of shite waiting for me when I get back.

Or this is probably also correct:

We have unlimited PTO at my company. Take as many vacations as you want, within reason, as long as your work is getting done on time. Sounds great, but it's actually a trap. You end up taking less time off because you don't feel the pressure to use the hours.
