People acted weird if you were taking a day off to just relax at home.
Why are you talking so much at work about what you're taking off for? If someone asks just say you're going to see someone out of the state or something.

What industry allows you to do that? Kind of sounds like tech.

Yep! It really is the dumbest policy. My DD thinks it looks bad to go very negative, but I usually take most my vacations in the Spring. I'm taking the same amount of vacations as everyone else, just earlier.
Now I want to figure out who you are haha

well the place i work for, i am the only person who handles the installation of equipment for our customers, and usually do 3 to 5 a week, sometimes I actually travel to a client for a week at a time. I routinely lose Vacation because I just don't have a downtime for work to allow it.

It’s an antiquated way of thinking that not using paid AL is in some way a sign of loyalty and dedication. The truth is that you’re only hurting yourself, and that life for the company will go on just fine in your absence.

I can carry over - no max. Get one day of both annual and sick every two weeks. Retiring next year and whatever is on the books for both can be bc added to years worked to pad retirement (defined benefit). More money to go out and play on every month ......and I am.going to play. Boat is already pawing on the concrete. That said, if I were in a use it or lose it situation I would use it up or if able,b accumulate the max allowed and use anything over it. If company would not pay for accumulated leave, I use it all up before giving notice.

Not going to take a day off just because I have it available. All that does is make work pile up for when I get back.
I use my PTO for when I have a reason to take off.

I have a great employer that gives me 6 weeks paid vacation.
Unfortunately, I'm commission. Any time off is ultimately on my dime.
I make a lot more than the grunts who aren't commission, so I understand why it is there. I can kiss my boss goodbye for those 6 weeks though. That is a perk.

My old company would let you cash them out though up to 1 week per year.
I sold some days back last year because I was just going to sit at home doing nothing. Might as well have gotten some extra cash out of it.

One profession that I would say that not using your vacation is okay is teaching. You have nearly 2-3 months off baked into your work schedule.
I can recall several teachers being able to take nearly a year off before retiring, but that was way before some districts changed their policies.
The other is any profession that you work on days on and off like 7 and 7 or 14 and 14, because you are literally off for half the year.

I rarely use any of my days, I like my job.
But every June 1st, I get paid for my unused days.

I'm off by design every other Friday..........and try to take the other Friday's off as frequently as possible during the year.....and 1-2 vacations (local stuff) sprinkled within. I enjoy my job, but I enjoy a lot of other stuff way more.
This is my style. Lots of long weekends in lieu of one big vacation a year. Had a job once where my immediate supervisor actually called me in and chewed me out because he wanted me to “just take two weeks off like everybody else.” He then said it was too hard for him to cover my shifts when I took random days off. That assholes only job was doing the schedule and he was trying to bully me into making it easy for him. frick that guy.

Correct. Relatively young tech company.

I work in consulting and 90% of clients are located out of state in a different time zone. My email is on my phone and I make myself available in some capacity until 7PM (5PM their time), so there’s not a real need to have my body physically at my desk from X time until Y time.
I go into the physical office because I find that I get stuff done much easier at my desk with my whole setup, but the work can technically be done from anywhere so I certainly don’t wake up at the crack of dawn to rush into work.

i don’t get true time “off”.
i get 12 days PTO a year.
but the O really only means don’t physically show up at the office.
we are all still on 24 hour call even during PTO.
so i rarely take any of my 12 days.

I usually have at least a week left at the end of the year. But I also go on a lot of company hunting trips and other functions without having to burn vacation, so it all equals out.
