I don't ask to be off either, but if you just come and go as you please it sound like you aren't very essential to the operation. I let every one know as soon as possible so we can all plan to not have a shite storm when I get back.
I have to use something like 12 days in the next 4 months or I lose them. Im single and live by myself, id rater work than sit at home all day.

We can rollover 350 hrs and sell back anything that we want over that if we choose.

I'm off by design every other Friday..........and try to take the other Friday's off as frequently as possible during the year.....and 1-2 vacations (local stuff) sprinkled within. I enjoy my job, but I enjoy a lot of other stuff way more.
Yeah, I've always wondered why more people don't structure their paid vacation like this more often.
I understand taking a week for a trip or something, but being off is pretty damn nice too.
Let's say you've got 4 weeks paid vacation - you can take a week somewhere, then use 12 days to take off the first Friday in every month of 2018 (none are federal holidays), and you've still got 3 days to spare elsewhere.

Que the live to work
I was just thinking that. I'm happy for the small percentage that truly enjoys what they do and it doesn't feel like work.
But for the rest of us... I work so that I can afford to enjoy the time that I'm not behind my desk. The more time I can spend with family and friends the better.

They are the one's that are afraid of losing their job or think that will put them in good with the boss. Nothing could be further from the truth though.

I had a guy working with me who would never take PTO. He couldn't make overtime when he was on vacation.

I enjoy my job. I still take time off, but I do it to actually travel. If I take off a random Thursday what am I going to do, sit home and watch First Take and The View all day?

pretty much how i try to do it. we'll take 1 family vacation with the kids usually 4-5 days.....then the wife and i will go somewhere for 3-4 days. but having about 40 fridays off during the year is awesome.....especially with a son who plays high school football.....and several of those fridays off match up with a holiday on a monday or thursday, so you end up having multiple 4 day weekends.

My first job out of grad school, I’m working on a project for one of the company’s directors (not my boss). It’s November and I tell him I’m taking a couple days off at the end of the month and in December so I don’t lose my PTO days.
He looks at me and, as if telling me something I wasn’t aware of, proceeds to say, “Well, you don’t have to use all of your time each year”. Just kind of in a matter-of-fact way.
A little while later, I’m in the office late and I say that I’m heading home so I can see my kids before they go to sleep. He tells me “They’re probably already asleep, why the rush?” It’s like 8PM.
A few months later I accepted a job at another company.
I have no problem with people who choose to have a live-to-work mentality, but screw anyone who tries to impose that miserable crap on anyone else.

I get 5 weeks per year and can roll over seven. I've been at my company so long that I typically roll over right at seven weeks every year. We are also paid for our unused vacation when we leave. So I plan on leaving with 12 weeks in the bank and get a nice fat payday when I retire.

If I take day off there's just more shite piled up when I get back. Nobody's going to do it for me.

-2 weeks sick per calendar year
-2 weeks vacation per year (hire date, Feb 1 for me)
-Allowed to roll over 1 week of vacation
-Sick resets at 2 weeks on January 1st
I will be "sick" for a total of 2 weeks exactly between 1/1 and 12/31. I will take a minimum of 1 week of vacation time in the period.
Ideally I end up with 5 weeks total PTO at any given time
I'm salaried and they track us like god damned inmates.
I hate my companies HR policies. I'd take a flex schedule over a raise up to 15% at this point. I swear 30-40% of the year we are at the office just to be there.

Exactly. It’s not so much that I get paid days off.
Basically my vacation time allows me to defer that same work to another day when I’ll have to make it up.

I would take 2-3 hours a day every single day. Skip lunch and put in a back breaking 9-2 Monday-Thursday, Friday work from home day until I’m too drunk to send emails

I don't get it either. I know of people in my office that have thousands of hours of vacation and sick leave. I'm happy to have over 100.

You’re mistaken. You must be a doer. Doers are needed for the day to day operations. Leaders are not. Keep grinding, baw. You’ll get there one day.
Posted on 5/17/18 at 10:01 am to Scooba
Damn I just did the math and on 4 day work weeks, for 52 weeks it equates to 208 days of work.
Yall baws need to get on board.

Run a few errands.
Go visit a distant relative on a three day weekend.
Play golf with dad who probably doesn't take his vacation days.
Take a walk through city park.
Literally anything other than go to work for free.
