I don't get it either.. And they are usually proud about it..

I worked with a guy like this. He got food poising once, only missed a day.. It was his second time since he started working (worked for same company since he had been working and he been there.. over 10 years) that he used a sick day and the most vacation time he ever used in a year was 5.. He was at 14 vacation days a year.. And he was proud of it.

frick that. People like that.. I just have to wonder. What is going on in their life where they would rather be at work than do anything else?

Sick days IMO are different. I don't take them unless I need them. In 10 years Ive probably taken 5 sick days including a surgery.

Their salary increases and bonuses were spent by the company allowing them to take two weeks off, and 10 holidays and five sick days.

Employers should not penalize workers for taking days that are given as a perk of the job. If my company has a problem with me taking 4 weeks off, then they shouldn't offer it. As far as career advancement, my work ethic and productivity speaks for itself. The fact that the office feels my absence justifies my salary and placement.

I currently have 112 hours of vacation, 31 hours of "float" time, and 56 hours of sick that accrue every 2 weeks.

Still get comp days for any mandatory overtime since I'm salaried and any holiday that I work.

Can roll over up to 80 hours of sick, 120 hours of vacation, but the float/personally says cannot be rolled over. So I'll be scheduling those out those for weekend trips to Tiger Stadium!

My job is 24/7 but my schedule is pretty sweet. Work week is Sunday thru Thursday.

I absolutely love the company I work for.

I see you've been here a while; let me help you. Welcome to Tigerdroppings, a forum where people discuss things.

And you directly or indirectly report to all of them, don't you?

Not at all. I believe they fall into the "miserable at home" category.

We have unlimited PTO at my company. Take as many vacations as you want, within reason, as long as your work is getting done on time. Sounds great, but it's actually a trap. You end up taking less time off because you don't feel the pressure to use the hours.

Same here. I’m happy with it. When I had structured PTO, it was still annoying because company culture made you feel like you could only use it for an actual planned trip. People acted weird if you were taking a day off to just relax at home. And they’d never have been cool with you using the hours to come and go through the day.

Now that there’s no paperwork or no requirement to tell someone where I’m physically sitting during business hours (we all live in different states), I’m far more productive and overall happier. I don’t have to stress about a “lunch break” or sit in rush hour traffic.

It's a red flag for fraud, especially if they are losing their vacation days at the end of the year.

That doesn't mean they ARE committing fraud, but often times people who commit fraud in the workplace by stealing, or diverting money, don't want to take a day off and have their back-up person catch wind of what they are doing.

This is true only if you handle the incoming money. The baw that hates his wife that doesn't take a day off from the plant isn't kiting checks from accounts receivable

I just got put into an unlimited PTO program. I was getting 6 weeks PTO a year, plus always carried over the max 5 days, so went into every year with 7 weeks vacation.

I love the idea of unlimited but, I'm with you, I don't want to be "that guy". Thinking I'm just going to track my days myself and try to keep the time I take off in the vicinity of the 6-7 weeks I had before.

I can't stand the folks who don't use their time, much less when they brag about it. About as bad as folks who brag about never having had a drink of alcohol.

I have somewhere between 25-30 days (not sure of the exact number) that I cant roll over and never use all of. I probably use 15 or so a year.

It's a meaningless number of days though. I have billable hours that have to be met each year so there is no way to take all my days, so meaningless number.

I use some of mine but usually not all of it. We get paid for unused days at the end of the year. I'm no OT baller so the extra cash is always welcomed.

Yup. I just had to purposely take vacation during a busy time as a negotiation technique. Boss told me I was worth a certain amount and I disagreed. Got back from vacation and we were on the same page. Funny how that works.

My company doesn't allow us to carry over any unused PTO into the new year - which is bull shite - so I make sure to take off the last two weeks in December. Screw them. ETA: My boss always gets pissy when I go negative in the beginning of the year because of my taking off 4 days for Mardi Gras to go back to visit the fam and party. I try to explain to him that it isn't my fault that I don't have the hours. If the company would let us roll over hours, I wouldn't be going negative. We start every year with 0. So stupid.

You're with Bobby Half too right? I did the same thing at the start of this year. We went to Nashville in January and I was already like -3 days for this year because I wasn't able to carry any over.

People who don't use their paid vacation are stupid.

I went ahead and finished the sentence for you.

People that don't have more things to do outside of work than their free time allows need to re-evaluate their lives. Some of my wife's friends work in hospice care, they never had a dying patient regret not spending more time at work.

I always take the full amount. I rolled over two weeks each year when I had five in a consulting firm. I couldn’t get off for more than 3 weeks each year but I eventually got paid out for those weeks I didn’t use when I left.

I was always rolling time over...someone people gave up weeks of PTO which is not my approach.
