Parenting question - what time should a teenager be going to bed during the school year?

My wife wants lights out at 8:45 for our 13 year old son. He usually falls asleep within 15-20 minutes. His alarm is set for 6:20am on school days.
That gets him 9-9.5 hours of sleep per night. American Pediatrics suggests 8-10 hours of sleep for teenagers, so he’s right in that range.
But I definitely wasn’t going to bed then as a teenager. My dad and I would watch ball games at night. Or I’d play video games or watch tv shows. I think I was going to sleep around 10/10:30 and getting up at 6:45.
It’s not something I’m going to argue with her about as he is genuinely sleeping that amount and is well rested throughout the day.
But I am curious how others handle sleep schedules as their kids have gotten older.

What time are they waking up in the morning?

Probably would’ve been 0645-0700. It’s been a decade

My 12 year old goes to bed at 9, lights out, no phone, real bed time. Wakes up at 5:20.
ETA: she relaxes in her bed before then by her own doing. Watches some TV or talks on the phone.

Lights out by 9 and asleep by 10. I always had sports and woke up much earlier than 620.

My 10-year old goes to bed at 9:30 & wakes up naturally at 5AM. No alarm.
She'll be sitting on the couch fully dressed, eating breakfast when I come downstairs at 6.

8:45 for 13 seems too early. That's more like a 9-10 year old bed time.

9-930 until this year. He’s getting older, turned 17 over the summer, so we're getting him to take more responsibility for his sleep/wake schedule. As long as school work is done, it's flexible.
Without us setting limits for him, he actually decided for himself to shut down and put away electronics at 9pm sharp- dunno when he goes to sleep though.

Thats a bit early IMO. 10pm would seem more reasonable. But if hes not complaining then why worry?

You need sleep to grow. Get his arse in the bed early.

He is complaining a bit. But I’m worrying more about it.
He’s missing out on some social experiences. He has friends who do online gaming together after sports from 9-10. His younger sister goes to bed at 815ish, so 8:30-930 would be a good time to watch an older kid show together. Things like Sunday Night or Monday Night football are ended for him before halftime.
But like you said, he’s not really having any problems here. He’s sleeping and not just laying in bed.

Thats a good age for learning good habits. Sleep should be a priority for everyone regardless of age and the later you go to bed the less sleep youre going to have the opportunity to get. Id there's nothing dictating he stays up later, 830 or 900 is a good time to crash out.

Seems wild to be telling a 16 year old it’s bed time especially at 9

When I was a kid, a half century ago, parents wouldn’t let us stay up past 10pm on a school night…

At 13 I was supposed to be in bed by 9 but I stayed awake in bed and listened to my TV band radio and went to sleep after Letterman’s monologue.
