OT Parents, thoughts on holding your kids back a grade?

My sons birthday is September, and my wife wants to consider him attending Pre-K twice. What say the OT?

I say do it...definitely helps grades down the line.

i recommend making that decision in 1st grade.
They yap about maturity and shite up until then but frick it and let him ride it out until first grade. That grade IMO is when its a bit more worthy where they reinforce actual reading skills etc that make it worthwhile holding back and yet he's still really young.

My son had the same issue... sept birthday. While he did fine in k-5 (course work wise), his discipline and focus was a problem due to immaturity.
held him back to take k-5 again and he is a much more mature student. he is having fun and understands the classroom structure much better. He will be 18 when he graduates. I think the older the better.

Unless a child is struggling socially or academically, why would you hold them back? The only parents who do this at my kids school do it for athletic reasons so little Billy can be a stud football player.

Is your wife suggesting he turn 19 at the start of his senior year, or are you suggesting he turn 17 at the start of his freshman year in college?
Sept isnt a month that usually requires thought

He'll never know the difference that young. The only reaason I would not is if he's really smart and he would get nothing out of it. I would say 90% of 5 year olds don't meet that criteria.
I would do it because I think it will be much better for him as a teenager. There's a big difference in the 12-17 range and being a year younger would suck, imo.

We have twins, boy and a girl.. Our daughter advanced after kindergarten, but we held our son back... Not that he wasn't smart enough, he wasn't motivated enough.. He hated school, and didn't want to participate.. Smartest move we made.. Little guy is continuously on the gold honor roll now..
