My brother graduated at 17, went off to college and promptly went crazy with back to back sub-2.0 semesters and getting arrested for a fistfight with a tow truck driver. He straightened out after sitting out a year, but he was not ready for college at 17.

I was a September baby & my parents let me start at 4. Thank god. I was always a head taller than everybody else, even though I was the youngest. I would have looked insane if my parents held me back another year.

My son was in a similar situation. My wife brought up holding him back the first couple years of elementary at our parent/teacher meetings, and the teachers always said not to because he was mature and advanced enough to move forward. If he was in public school, I might have considered holding him back, but I didn't want to have to pay for an extra year.

As far as athletics, he starts HS next year and is one of the biggest and best football players on his team. I would hate to see what he would have done to middle schoolers if we had held him back a year.

You can’t be in K in La outside of the dates accepted for that year. So the age on 10/1 is his school age

My sons birthday is September, and my wife wants to consider him attending Pre-K twice. What say the OT?

I gradated HS at 17 and had no problems

Are you only considering this because he would graduate at age 17? That seems like a dumb reason.

The youngest person in my graduating class (5a private all boy school) had a june birthday(it def kept this particular kid from having a solid high school athletic career/small college, but that isnt a big deal he did fine with grades)

I couldnt imagine someone with a Sept one

I had no idea that was somewhat common

i recommend making that decision in 1st grade.

This is what we are doing. My son is in first grade now with July birthday.

We didn't want to do another year of Pre K because our elementary school is good and pre k sucked. We figured go ahead and get him started and hold him back in first or second if needed. He also is a tall kid so we didn't have to worry about him being littlest in his class.

Kindergarten went fine but he was youngest in his class and was definitely less mature.(Some kids were almost a full year older then him, and girls are more mature no matter what) However, there was no point in repeating kindergarten because it was easy for him.

First grade has been a bit more struggle because its a big jump up from kindergarten. We are going to hold him back and repeat first grade to reinforce his writing and reading.

He doesn't seem like repeating first grade will upset him. What he cares about is being one of the bigger and tougher kids, so he will have that going for him by repeating first grade.

With the op's kid being September just realize he will have classmates a full year older. So his size and maturity should factor into the decision. (you don't want him to be the class crybaby so to speak)

I've been told by multiple teachers that whatever decision you make, young and old kids all become about equal in 3rd and 4th grade.

In hindsight, I would have held my boy back before kindergarten but I don't think holding back in first grade is a bad thing either.

Foolish, unless the child really isn't mature enough to compete with his peers.

Could come up with plenty of pros and no cons

This is how I always feel when this discussion comes up

I see plenty of potential cons for not holding him back, but dont really see the cons for holding him back

My son has a September birthday and I was hesitant to hold him back but my wife was pushing for it. I went ahead and did it and have no regrets. He is only in first grade but he is making straight A's And I expect that to continue.

My brother had a late birthday and wasn't held back. Can't help but think that maybe always being the youngest helped him to become the liberal he is today.

I would say if your child is well adjusted socially and grasps the educational piece, no need to hold back.

I really think we have until 5 grade-ish to figure it out for the long haul.

Good strategy except for the social aspect of it. A 5th grader getting held back would get made fun of by his old classmates. A 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grader would be less so because those kids don't care. I kinda think 3rd or 4th grade should be last point to hold a kid back strictly because of age.

my opinion is the timing of the holding back. it would suck to hold him back now in pre k when they drawing circles and he still struggles when they get to a year when they actually make a leap forward in reading skills etc. Let him repeat a year he gets way more benefit from.
