My youngest has a birthday in late Sept too. We made the decision that as long as he was grasping the material and not struggling, we'd push him along. Now, he's only in 2nd grade, but he's getting straight A's (well, he got one "B" in the 1st qtr this yr). I really think we have until 5 grade-ish to figure it out for the long haul.
But, for the real reason you're asking, just play him up in rec sports and he'll learn to adjust to being the youngest on the field early. It won't be a problem. hahaha

I wouldn't start a kid in Kindergarten when he is 4. It's better to be the oldest kid than the youngest kid.

same. i had a late September birthday. cutoff back then was December 31st to be 5 now it is august 31st. my daughter is the 22nd, and i think early one if we waited a year it would have benefited her. however, now that she is in 10th grade, i dont think that anymore... she is doing just fine.

Scruffy graduated at 17. His younger brother stayed back a grade and he was born in June.

My daughter has an August birthday and is the youngest in her class. My son has a September birthday. We are holding him back and he will be the oldest in his class. After I researched it and talked to lots of people, it's best for girls to be younger and boys to be older.

My parents held me back in seventh grade. It worked out for me. I was very immature, and that extra year made a lot of difference athletically, and academically.

A very wise teacher gave us this advice: she has never heard one parent say that they regretted holding one back; while she has had scores of parents regret not holding one back.
My twin girls were born in August - wanted to give them an extra year to mature before we sent them off into the world.
Son's birthday December, so no choice there.
