I'm curious to see how this turns out. Keep us posted. And this...

quote:

I would take it to a local mechanic and make sure that everything is good with it.

is great advice.

Do you still have the police report with the Vin #? Call the police dept in that city, tell them someone has your stolen bike and they are now trying to extort you for the return of it. Regardless of this being a mechanic shop or a snowball stand, they're in possession of stolen property. The burden is on them to defend their self when the cops show up. They can hire an attorney and sue the guy who dropped it off and go through that entire debacle, or just give your bike back.

It would look real bad if they end up getting a black eye for being a chop shop. When you escalate the issue and the local law shows up I'm sure ole gal will have a change of heart.

I cant see them having any right to the bike unless they were the ones who impounded the bike for the police.

Absolutely. This is an obvious case of them trying to scam OP. I'd just go ahead and get the police involved and make them wish they'd taken the initial offer of splitting the sale price plus the cost of the repair.

I'd make it my mission to screw that shop over. At least cause as much embarrassment to their business as possible if they do hand the bike over.

Connecting the dots fee... That's some lowdown shite right there

Take lots of notes collect pictures, keep the paperwork.

After this is over, there are magazines out there just looking for interesting content, like this story.

Jesus...

Sorry I'm not laughing at your situation, just what kind of backwards shite hole in MS (or anywhere for that matter) does a police department close on Friday? I didn't know PD's ever closed.

Probably the same city the bike has been driven for the past few years until it got to the mechanic...

If the town is that small, then the Chief's sister is probably the lady who wants the "connect the dots" fee.
Hell, maybe it's his wife.

Wrong the mechanic shop will have to sue and go after whoever dropped it off. The bikes owner can go pick the bike up since they are holding stolen property.

Well since I can’t get an answer from the police department, should I respond back to her and say simply “I do not authorize the beginning of the abandonment process”? I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get out there. Trying to arrange that now.

If the local PD is that small I’d def go with the Sheriff’s office. Better chance you will get someone who isn’t friends or family with the shop owner/worker. I’d def show up with an officer rather than alone. Place is obviously run by unintelligent or criminal people.

Yea- I would indicate intention to have the bike returned but perhaps not that it’ll be aggressive in nature until you have your legal standing in line.

A basic “thank you for the update, I will be in touch shortly with next steps, and do not intend to abandon the property”

Ultimately, they should’ve made sure they had a method of payment instead of stolen goods for collateral. It’s up to them to pursue the person that authorized the work for the corresponding payment I would assume.

A friend’s car was stolen once. Police found it, called a wrecker company, then called him. He had to get it from the wrecker company and pay the tow fee.

I would assume this is the same here. You may pay for a wrecker tow fee. But if the company did any work on it, then they have to sue the owner for that money. Just my logical guess.

Near Starkville

Village Cycle Center??? If yes it's outside the Starkville City Limits in Clayton Village and the cops would be Oktibbeha County Sheriffs office. The wrecker service would probably be William Wells Tire and Auto on the opposite side of the highway about 50 yards from the Cycle Shop.

Call Chris Farris, attorney in Hattiesburg. Has ties statewide and can either handle or refer. Solid, honest attorney with great track record.
