OpenAI CEO says 'quite terrible' for your PC to have RAM - better at data centers

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has data centers full of memory, but seemingly it's the 32GB of RAM in your desktop that's the problem. In an interview over beers with the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint, Altman said that local inference, and, by extension, people having DRAM in computers at home, is "quite terrible."

"From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," Altman said. "You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that."

Altman's talk suggests that the company would prefer that more RAM go to OpenAI's data centers rather than home computers, which also sparks enthusiast fears of not being able to own your own hardware or software, but rather rent an agent and a computer in the cloud.

He should just download some more RAM for his data centers

BoarEd will be along any second to just correct us to use OpenSI instead of AI. That's the important shite

AI ruined the hobby I loved. You can't even build small projects with SBCs anymore without it costing hundreds sometimes due to RAM prices.

If he's buying, I'd be glad to sell him some RAM
I wonder what Sam thinks about all the capital sitting in rich people's banks, all the land dedicated to CEOs' vacation homes, all the port space taken up by yachts, all the brainpower spent taking care of it instead of enriching the world etc.

Didn't we already do this with dumb terminals and everybody fricking hated it?

It's such a waste for people to own a bed, but only sleep in it 8 hours a day without letting me rent it out to strangers for the other 16 hours.

Sorry about your small black cocks hobby downturn.
Pivot to other small cocks in the interim perhaps?

This is now where Amazon makes a huge percentage of their profits. Companies rent out their servers from Amazon and they don't have to have a server room or someone inhouse to maintain the servers. Its AWS. Amazon web services and their biggest client is Netflix. If all of a sudden Amazons servers that is used to provide these services were attacked, it would impact some big companies.

I pieced my dual Xeon Precision 7820 workstation together in 2022
I recently looked at upgrading the RAM in it and was blown away that the same DDR4 I bought in 2022 is more expensive now.
First time in building computers for the last 20 years where I noticed prices on components not only holding in value, but going up.

Dear Sam, frick off.
Thankfully I built my PC over a year ago before prices really got out of hand.

These threads always remind me I have 32 GB of DDR5 RAM (2x16) I bought for like $100 a few years ago sitting in a drawer.
I bet Atlman would hire ex-Mossed to kill me for the insulting inefficiency

He thinks it’s a problem that regular people take up land for homes that are too big for a small family when they could live in a pod and the land be better suited for a data center rather than a private home. And those pesky middle class tying up capital in retirement savings rather than spending it on his products. All the land and resources should belong to people like him who can use it better than the stupid peons ever will. We should hand it over so they can use it to make us happier than ever
