Titanium Dioxide.
They still make it, they just split it off into a different company called Chemours.
They poisoned something like 90% of the country's drinking water, but they got paid the frick back when China stole their formula for the compound. They used to be the world's only producer, now China makes 2/3rd's of it.

His own state is shite and doesn't offer employment opportunities so he is coming to make a wage qualified people in the state won't work for.
A. If I do go work at that data center, it will be for a lot higher than the local wage scale, because I make more working out of my local than the guys in Monroe do in theirs.
B. Unlike Louisiana, my state doesn't have a shrinking population.
Louisiana is in trouble.

And once they're built, a contractor electrician will need to visit the data center to install new power whips or do UPS testing, what, once a month?
I don't know what that entails. My guess is that they negotiate service agreements with local electrical contractors. They could hire and train their own people and travel them to different data centers, but I'm sure they need somebody locally to respond to any kind of emergencies.
They also will have their own full-time maintenance employees who can do a lot of different things and basic tasks, but they'll need technicians in various trades for bigger and more detailed jobs.

But politicians agree to concessions all over the place that just because the data center is as big as two football fields will "employ a bunch of people."
Thousands of new jobs during construction. Maybe 100 after the project is done, and they'll bring most of those people from elsewhere. There will be a little more permanent work for skilled tradesman in the area, but that's it.

You don't even know what that word means in the context.
We get work because we understand how to do the job.
We organized because that allows us to quickly find work anywhere on the planet.
I could quit a job in Florida on a Friday and be working a different job in California on Monday, and when I retire, I'll make more than I did working.

The construction of the data centers, and maybe even the new power plants, must not be using union labor.
Also, I know you don't see much of the world from your cubicle, but nothing of this scale is getting built without a shitload of skilled union labor.

Thanks for the information.
You serious?
Data centers love IBEW. For the rest of my career I'll be able to work on these data centers for 6-8 months a year and make more than I could in a full year at home.
I'm just glad there's not one going up in my area.

Wrong again.
Ratepayers will absorb AT MOST 50% of the costs of the new power plants.
No.
The depreciation for these plants was negotiated at 15 years of which facebook will pay half.
The true depreciation for the plants will be at least twice as long, and Louisianians will pay that.
quote:
Or, another way to look at it, Louisiana homeowners and businesses will be gaining access to long-term electrical power supplies for half the cost of new power plants.
Or, another way to look at it, Louisiana homeowners and businesses will pay higher rates to support a mega corporation that will use this facility to further develop AI, which will then abuse those same homeowners and businesses.
quote:
Plus, Louisiana citizens will enjoy additional employment opportunities from the construction and operating of the new data centers and power plants which are primarily being built in rural, poverty stricken areas of our state. .
In my union, the local in this area already has enough work for their people. The pay rate is also low, so facebook will pay thousands of people like me a higher pay rate than the people of north Louisiana earn to come in and live and work in Monroe and the surrounding areas, where yes, we will support the local area some. But ultimately, we'll drive the rent market up for a few years and take most of our earnings back to our home states.

I realize you and others always believe "they" are out to hurt you but it's not always the case.
Sometimes it's just your paranoia controlling your lives and there is no they.

Electricity is like any other commodity. Price goes up with demand. You don’t get to claim it as only for residential.
Bunch of commies.
The demand is driven by a billionaire who is using it for a data center that will employ few people and pay much lower tax rates while destroying fresh water and putting off much of the cost of the new power plants on people who will themselves be a commodity and customer of said data center.
