The thug had an aggressive posture. Lucky e didn't get shot. And he was obviously resisting.

Are you a special kind of stupid? He wasn't in uniform, so without audio, no evidence he identified himself as a cop. If someone rolled up on you and started taking you to the ground, how are you going to react?

On one hand you think you are making a felony arrest on a suspect that you don't know anything about so you don't give him any chance to fight you.
On the other hand you have a guy just hanging out and a random guy basically attacks him and takes him to the ground. If I was the guy I probably would have put up resistance also.
I understand that you want to take down the bad guy quickly and effectively without giving him a chance to fight, but when you are not in uniform you have to make sure to do it in a way that the suspect knows you are a cop and not some thug attacking you.
You also ALWAYS apologize and explain to the person why you did what you did if you got the wrong guy. This was a case of a witness misidentifying the suspect. That happens a lot. One time I along with a bunch of other officers made a felony stop on a car with two black males in it. The car matched the description of the car used in a armed robbery with 2 black males suspects. The car we pulled over and did a felony traffic stop on turned out to be a general manager of the local TV station and a OBGYN doctor. The doctor had delivered 4 of the officers on scene kids including both of mine. This was a case of mistaken identity and we all explained to both of them what happened and we all apologized profusely to both of them.

Here's the thing. The officer approached the suspect and clearly tried to place the suspect in a passive posture at which time I'm sure he identified himself as a police officer and then the suspect began to push the police officer in what I can only assume was an attempt to disarm the police officer. When that happened the officer took the suspect to the ground. He could have handled the suspect much more harshly IMO.

I love how you aren't up on current events regarding NYPD payouts.
They may get lucky as Blake doesn't need the money. He should still sue though. They will quickly settle.

Officers sidearm was holstered, so IDK what you are talking about with trying to disarm him. I would imagine any resistance at that time was do to the fact that James thought he was being attacked. The office was not in uniform and I would argue that shouting police while shoving someone to the pavement is not properly identifying yourself as an officer. I understand NYPD has a hard job, but this sort of take down is due to one of 3 things:
1. Laziness. As in he was to lazy to go through the proper steps of identifying himself and questioning James before he arrested him.
2. Bad training. It is possible that particular department has terrible leadership and trains their officers poorly.
