I attend LSU with the highest TOPS and pay about $7500 a yr including housing and meal plan. That’s cheaper than my high school tuition. Not too bad IMO. Had about a 3.7 in hs with a 28 ACT

ETA: I completely agree that TOPS standards need to be raised, however. Getting full tuiton with a 22 ACT is a massive joke. The amount of money a student gets from LSU with a 36 ACT vs a student with a 22 ACT is so small it’s embarrassing.

Yep. LSU does not compete. Daughter made 36 on her ACT and 1500 on SAT. Lots of AP and honors classes plus college credits and they only offered 5500 plus tops. She is going to Alabama. Full ride, plus stipend each month. Bama offered her more than LSU, RICE, Baylor or Tulane. Her mom and I both graduated from LSU but I am happy to send her to Bama

I can’t blame LSU here

The schools these days give a 4.28 fake snowflake gpa and it doesn’t balance out the 12 on the act

and LSU has only offered about $3500/year in non-TOPS scholarship $$$.

What about with TOPS? I had a 3.8 with a 31 ACT and wouldn't have paid a dime if I went there. Granted this was 12 years ago.

Do they not still have the Top 100 scholarship? You get that after TOPS and LSU pays you about $1000/semester to go there. IIRC there was a level superior to that if you had 33 ACT plus some other GPA requirements.

I think Mingo can be as much as a pompous/self-assures arse as you do, but he’s 100% right here. TOPS was meant to keep the best and brightest home and that’s what it did while Taylor was alive.

Once he died and it became owned by the politicians, they fricked it all up by lowering standards and redistributing it to every Tom dick and Harry that has a pulse

Seems like schools should be beating down your doors for your daughter

Doesn’t tops provide full tuition to anyone with good enough grades and scores?

Tuition only. Fees alone are over $2k a semester. Then there is books and housing...

maybe but the Bama Student Aid calculator says a LA student with a 4.0 and using the scores he provided
quote:

32 ACT (36 in English)
1470 SAT (790 in Math)

you still gonna need $22,920 per year.... A Student Calculator

Well, is your son a top notch athlete and bringing in millions to the University? No matter the race you arent getting into LSU with a 2.0 unless you are an athlete I assume.

It's insane. My wife received a full scholarship at LSU as an out of state applicant. Some of here sorority sisters with similar scores or better were in state and got squat. It's topsy turvy dumb shite. My wife and I are thankful though...haha

Can't beat that logic.

Not a subtle brag on my kid (although, I am very proud).

It's a statement of exasperation that the flagship university of this state (and my alma mater) is so miserly and cheap in rewarding in state academic achievers that it makes it very easy for them to accept offers from out of state schools.

assuredly, but it's futile to make a serious response to him because in his mind he's always right and completely infallible, and everyone else is a totally out in left field baboon, when in fact he is one closed minded, tunnel visioned, ultra subjective, stick up his arse goob

not sure if I even concede that but he kind of ruins a lot of discussions around here, for me at least, because discussion is not in his vocabulary, but preaching or lecturing certainly is

He's crying because she didn't get more than $3500 along with TOPS.

So tuition is paid for with TOPS, and she gets $3500 to do as she pleases.

That covers dorm and meal plans, plus probably books.

But not her luxory apartment or sorotistue funds.

Boo-fricking-hoo.
