That's what I thought it meant. But he used it so many times in that post that it was weird.

I’m thinking sharks. I can’t understand swimming like nothing wrong then suddenly gone. If that water is indeed shark infested then he was bait and got attacked and the video suggests such that going on.
He wasn’t necessarily suddenly gone. Where did this come from? He was suddenly out of the camera frame, that’s it and all that’s known.
ETA: it was dark and a crappy camera or go pro video, the field of view at night on these types of cameras is very limited.
A shark attack is violent. The chances of it being a shark attack and those on the boats not knowing is pretty dang slim. He likely yells and screams. It also is very unlikely a shark got him within basically 60 seconds of being in the water….this isn’t a sci fi movie.

Suddenly gone that night. You say eyes and ears would see or hear him but obviously they all lost track of him and boat was loud.

If you’re in the water and suddenly realize you need to get back on the boat, I’d think instincts tell you to swim to the back and climb on. Nobody climbs on a boat from the side, you go to the back.
I can’t tell in the video if he “disappears”. I think he just went out of frame and nobody could see him.
We’ve heard no stories of him thrashing or yelling or anything like that. My thought is he tried to get to the back of the boat but the boat kept moving and current wasn’t helping him.
I don’t buy into the shark theory unless it was later.

Are there not props on the back of this boat? If so, how would you climb up from the back?

People have an irrational fear of sharks and think the second a toe hits the water sharks are waiting to attack

Boat ladders are in the back. The back of the boat is usually the easiest place to grab onto and climb up.
Yes, there would be props but the dude was in the dark water watching a boat keep going, props may not have been his first thought.

Yep, just climb right up.

His obit says he was lost at sea. So very sad, but it seems the family is going to move ahead in their grief with a service to celebrate his life rather than waiting longer. I hope that helps them all.

Interesting new details in this article:
Seems like the family is trying to shut down any investigation into the shark theory. Could be that they prefer to imagine their son treading water alone until he drowned rather than imagining him dying from a shark attack.
Could also be that the former is a better way to sue the tour company. You can argue comparative fault if the kid wasn’t killed by a shark. You could argue they didn’t implement rescue protocol properly, they didn’t do enough, etc. Cant really sue anyone if the kid jumped in and was killed by a shark within 60 seconds.
Seems like they would want someone to debunk the shark theory. The fact they have shut it down tells me there is some validity to it that they don’t want explored.

A woman whose son was friends with Robbins and on the boat at the time told Fox News Digital that several students tried to grab Robbins before he took the plunge, but he broke free.

Experts have told Fox News Digital there is a vast array of marine life, including dolphins, tiger sharks and bull sharks in those waters that feed off the scraps from the boats.
quote:
The video appears to show a shadowy object in the water move toward the recent high school grad, who was swimming toward a life preserver before changing direction. However, the cellphone footage is too dark and chaotic to definitively show what happened, and the theory is no longer officially being investigated at the request of Robbins' family,
quote:
"None of the experts consulted can definitely say what's in the video due to the quality and length of the video," Trascher said. "The Robbins family has requested that we not entertain that theory any longer, so our official position is that we don't know what happened while Cam was in the water."

I hate the world we live in today. I hope the family has enough class not to be thinking about a lawsuit

Interesting. Some posters here think sharks are timid creatures that would in no way compete with one another to grab a piece of perceived “food.”
And in water, at night, that has heavy activity of major predators like bulls and tigers.
Sad story all around, but the “shark theory” is my bet.

True.
But then you read the story of the USS Indianapolis.
