You need to watch the video. They were laughing and calm b/c he was casually swimming around after jumping in. He never showed any kind of urgency or panic.
Nobody on the boat panicked until he went under
Aptly said. I saw the same. Convinced it was a shark.

Imo something grabs his left leg and pulls him under, its apparant that its an external force or animal bc hes a decent swimmer and this happens midstroke. His swimming motion is totally disrupted by this external force. This leaves the right leg still visible near the surface of the water.

I thought the shark theory was just the internet being dramatic at first, but if you look at the 10 to 13 second mark of this slowed down video, I don't think it's unreasonable in the slightest to conclude that's a shark or some other large marine animal. Now that doesn't mean it attacked him, that's a separate question, but it's entirely possible that is a shark in that segment of the video linked below, and it WOULD account for him almost immediately turning and heading in the opposite direction.

Look at the first 2 seconds between the kid and the ship. Same type of lighting and movement. Could just be swells also.

It could be swells possibly. I'm not saying it is a shark at the 10-13 second mark of that slowed down video, I just don't think it's an unreasonable take. It looks an awful lot like a big fish/shark would near the surface and makes a motion that a fish/shark would.

The shark portion of this thread is baffling and reeks if wish casting. First of all, its very short sided to even assume the "shark" isnt simply lights reflecting off the water at night. Regardless, lets assume that it is definitely some sort of marine life. But to immediately jump to the conclusion of it being sharks is analogous to hearing hoofbeats and thinking zebras.
If anyone has ever been on a boat at trolling speed in saltwater, especially within a mile of shore you can attest that you are almost guaranteed to see dolphins in the wake or along side the boat. It is literally strange NOT to see them. Night or day.
On the other hand, in a lifetime of being on boats in harbors, bays, and oceans I have never seen a shark behave like the assumed shark in the video WITHOUT it being purposefully (think shark diving/fishing) or indirectly (think shrimp boats) being chummed up. And even then it was rather rare to get them to the surface of the water and remain there.
Sharks are naturally cautious and not curious (Jaws was a movie, and chum is a thing for a reason). They are much more likely to avoid a human swimming in the water rather than approach it. This is why on shark excursions, even in areas that sharks are known to congregate, they always use chum to bring the sharks to the area under the boat. Yet, a dolphin will almost always seek out interaction with humans, especially near shore.
Assuming it was marine life and not a reflection of light, there is an infinitely more likely chance that it was a dolphin and not a shark. And as the video MAYBE shows, for marine life to approach a swimmer, it drastically increases the chances that it was a dolphin.
In 2022, there were 91 shark attacks. In the entire world. There was one in the Bahamas. When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras.
Prayers go out to the Robbins family. I can not imagine the grief they are dealing with at this time.

During the day, it was typically schools of fish, where as the one he did at night had multiple great white Sharks swimming around in the dark.
That's because there was a bright arse light attached to the GoPro that attracted said shark.

Did the kid fall, or did he jump? If he jumped it's tough to feel sorry for him as he is putting his life at risk and others also

Good point.
Maybe dolphins got him. Vicious little sea monsters with great PR.

I just don’t think that he understood in that moment that it was likely his only chance to locate the buoy and swim to it.
He chose to swim to the illuminated boat filled with all of his friends first. Then, once he was left behind he couldn’t find the buoy, and the boat couldn’t find him.

Whatever happened was a tragedy. People are just trying to make sense of it. All tragic situations are theorized about. This one is no different. May he rest in peace and his family find peace.

To be fair, the thread title is misleading and has never been corrected.
