Lost in 2nd grade because I spelled Arthur instead of author. bullshite.

These are kids trying to achieve something. Why bring race into it?

C'mon, America likes seeing one winner. They could have easily whittled it down and spiced it up for the TV audience:
Rounds 21 to 25: Spellers will spell while the remaining opponents throw small rocks at them.
Rounds 26 to 30: Spellers will drink a 12 oz beer (each round) before getting their word to spell.
Ratings would go through the roof!
