Think there will be any cry for "diversity" in the national spelling bee?
quote:
In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a record eight spellers were crowned co-champions Thursday night after each correctly spelled a word in the 20th and final round.
quote:
Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao and Rohan Raja spelled the final 47 words correctly in their historic walk-off victory, going through five consecutive perfect rounds at Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.
quote:
Although the bee had decided to split the first- and second-place money in the event of a tie, those plans were quickly scuttled and each speller was given the full $50,000 cash prize, in addition to a Scripps Cup.

I reckon that learning to spell names like those really helps sharpen your skills.

Why not keep going and why is it capped at 20 rounds?

So Asian-Americans study more than other average Americans? In other news, water is wet.

Wish I could say I'm surprised someone would go here right off the bat, but that's par for the course these days. You're either looking to be offended or looking to be offended by those who are offended. The cycle doesn't rest.

The tie breaker should be having them spell each other's names.

It is pretty pathetic.

I'm definitely not offended. It was actually a co-worker who made the comment so I figured I would come see what the OT thought.
Spelling was never something I cared to compete in. I was too busy playing a real sport.
