Yeah this issue appears to be concentrated to the more popular parks. Have heard horror stories of Zion and Yosemite as well

We were at Zion beginning of June. It wasn’t overly crowded then. Probably before peak season .

Yes, national parks are pretty much not enjoyable unless you go during the school year now
Same with Disney. Go when all the rug rats are in school.

The problem becomes no parking for most trailheads. We were in park in Yosemite and used the busses. The Bus lines in June were 45 minutes before seeing a bus while waiting to use the “inner park” transportation system that they push. When you do see a shuttle bus, you’re lucky if you can get on. The numbers need to be reduced during peak times.

So Joshua tree is not worth the time? I was kind of wondering if some people held that opinion. Seems like once you’ve seen one of those trees you’ve seen them all

Here's the story: I was working in Palm Springs. The wife came along because it was near our anniversary. After work one day, we jumped in the car and drove a good hour just to get to the park.

Once in the park, it was an hour to get to where the trees actually grow. So I drove and hour through the desert just to get to the point where I needed to drive another hour through the desert to see an area the size of 6 football fields where these Dr. Seuss-looking things grow.

Then it was another hour and a half to get out of the park, because the wife wanted to see if there was anything else to see. There wasn't.

Except for the trees, it's desert with a bunch of uninteresting rocks.

If you like camping, I can maybe see a reason to be there, but it was not my cup of tea at all.

Scooters on trails? Scooters shouldn’t be allowed it would seem. I saw someone complaining their wheelchair wouldn’t work on one of the trails in G’burg and that the employees were rude when she complained. Responses to her post did not go as she expected.

Parks are probably overcrowded because the cities have been taken over by thugs and bums. I’ve been taking my family vacations to state and national parks instead of the places I used to take them like Washington DC or Chicago.

went to JH summer of 2020 in mid July. Fishing guide said at that point they had already had double the previous summer's visitor numbers. And there was approx 30-45 days to go in the peak tourist season.

Every summer since covid, they have exceeded the previous year's visitor numbers.

Just went to mamouth caves last wknd. It was great... Also nice that it was 54 in the caves. No one asked me to take a picture of them... But would have done so gladly so that they would have had a picture to share. MORE people need to hike in parks if you ask me...or just hike in general

Parking in GSMNP is horrendous. You can't find a spot at a trailhead unless you're there by 7:30 am.

That’s why the park implemented the pay for parking. There also some visitor use studies going on and I expect more popular places to be placed on a lottery/ reservation system. They did a test of Laurel Falls and we do it annually for large group hikes to White Oak Sinks.

Not saying anything bad about vets, utmost respect, but am I the only one that noticed these two posts right next to one another?

I was able to get this lifetime National Parks free entry and free parking pass…

Maybe they should only let vets and their families in, like USAA insurance, that should reduce the crowds and help with recruitment

Near-by state parks and National Forests offer great scenery and much less crowded.

I wanted to do the maroon bell four pass loop in a couple weeks but they require an overnight permit which of course is sold out.

Mixed emotions here. I have driven & backpacked the National Parks for almost 60 years. Glad that so many have discovered the parks, but saddened that the kids & grandkids will never know the parks & even the backcountry as I did.
My trail days are over, so auto restricted, required reservations to drive Trail Ridge or Road to the Sun at really sad. Yes, go early, or late fermion before & after the rangers are on duty. Gonearleoer & later in the year.
Yes, can be be frustrating, but still worth the time & effort.

National Parks are not too crowded. National Parks that non-outdoor enthusiasts know about are too crowded--Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Smokey Mountains, etc. No one has ever complained about Capital Reef or Canyonlands being too crowded. Go to the national parks that the lazy people who do not want to get out of their cars and walk anywhere do not go to.

I understand your sentiment - 100% probably in a way you don’t understand.

When you’re paying guys prevailing wages to wait in that line it hurts a bit more. Especially in Yosemite where it costs me $75.09 an hour for a laborer…

ETA:

If you think national parks suck, national forests are terrible. Avoid at all cost.

I’ve heard that if you do a hike that’s more than say 30 minutes that it clears out fast?

this. i spend plenty of time in popular national parks, and i don't see a ton of other people within 15-20 minutes of the parking lot because america is so fat and lazy. leverage that to your advantage out there
