I went to Zion a month ago and I saw a 300 lb black woman in a red cocktail dress and high heels (!!!) walking the paved trail that leads to the Narrows.

I swear I am not making that up. I honestly stopped and looked around for a camera crew or someone filming her thinking it was some type of joke or video production. Nope. Just a dazzling queen inspired by Obama's narration on the Netflix NP documentary.

High fricking heels and a cocktail dress...on a hiking trail...in southern Utah!

Oh, and this trail was at the very back of the park and they have a mandatory shuttle system and it was late in the day and the last shuttle was leaving in less than 30 min. I was heading back to make sure I would catch the shuttle and she was going the other way. I guarantee her fat arse missed that last shuttle and someone had to come fetch her.

The National Park Service presently has a cumulative monetary shortfall of approximately $11.1 billion. This shortfall, which has accumulated over the years, has arisen from a backlog of unfunded operations, construction projects, land acquisitions, and resource protection projects.

For some reason I am perfectly fine with our national parks running at a deficit. They are one of the last things I'd wanna cut the budget for because we spend way more money on way dumber shite.

My favorite part of Yosemite was Tuolumne Meadows. There was a cool little pond and clearing off the road on the way that made for a great picnic spot. I have heard tell there is a way to cross country ski from near Mammoth Mountain across the pass into Yosemite in the winter. Always thought that would be cool.

I’d have to say the same, after Half Dome. Hardly anyone along the road and a nice lake to stop at along the way.

Worked in Yellowstone back in the 70's & back then, from mid June till mid Aug. the Park was almost a parking lot. The Park is basically a large circle & it would get bumper to bumper at some points. Old Faithful area was like Bourbon St. during Mardi Gras. Only time to go is mid May & then late Aug.

Passing through Yellowstone next month for a day on the way to the Tetons. Is there a geyser with as good or near a payoff as Old Faithful that results in a better experience due to less of a crowd? Any other must sees?

We went to Banff last week and it was slammed. However, everyone is correct, we picked very long difficult hikes and on one to Lake Ohara we did not see a soul, hear a car or even see evidence of life for over 2.5 hours.

This was us 9 years ago on the Bow Lake / Falls trail. Want to go back.

I've been to Grand Teton 5 times (6th will be in September

We’re heading there in Sept as well and will be in the backcountry for 2 nights. Any good fishing in the lakes? Why do you go back here so often other than it’s amazing?

Suggestion: Dont go to Jenny Lake or Gatlinburg. I drove 20 miles of the Smokies today and passed one car and didnt see one person on a 5 mile hike.

OF is just one geyser in a large area of geysers.
There are others that are nearby that are within an easy walk and they post predicted eruption times for some of them.

Castle geyser is about a 1/2 mile from the OF lodge.

Get a half mile from the road in practically any national park and you have it all to yourself

That's not true about Yosemite or GSMNP. The popular trails in both that are around 4-5 miles long are just lines of people if you don't get started early. By 10-11, they can have traffic jams on the trails. Get up and out at 7, and you're good. Parking in GSMNP is horrendous. You can't find a spot at a trailhead unless you're there by 7:30 am.

So the country's oldest and most popular National Park is crowded while school is out? You don't say!

Sounds like you should have planned better or went to less popular park.

We hike off the beaten path trials early that are 5 mile one way minimum. We usually pass a shite ton of people by the time we are 3/4 of the way back to,the trailhead.

Is the juice worth the squeeze? Are the views/end points better than the easy places?

Went to Jackson and Yellowstone 3 weeks ago, only crowding we ran into was at Jenny Lake in Teton NP.
