They aren't as nice as they were in the 80 and 90s crowd wise for sure. But you can still get away from people if you want. Yellowstone is HUGE.
Get up in Lamar Valley etc and it's better. We went 2 years ago and the only place it felt like an amusement park was at old faithful and some of the more popular geyser basins. And that was right after things were opening up due to covid and were more crowded.
Smokies is the same. Cades cove and laurel falls are nuts, but other areas aren't bad at all.

The ONLY time to visit Yellowstone is after labor day and before memorial day. You don't have but a few week window on either side, but the experience is SOOOOOO much better.

July is peak season in most parks. We did Rocky Mountain, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Grand Canyon (North Rim) in late June/Early July. Rocky was crowded, but not terrible on week days. Capitol Reef was great. No crowds at all. Bryce was disgusting. Bused in people from Vegas overran the place. North Rim was fairly quiet. It only gets 10% of GC traffic.
The best time to hit parks is late spring before many northern schools dismiss, or fall after kids are back in school. I've had traditionally crowded sites literally to myself on fall visits.

Why do people take kids under the age of four or so anywhere except for places meant for them? Of course they need to get out, get some fresh air, and of course parks and playgrounds and sandboxes exist for them.
But I was at the National Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday and there were about 10 moms pushing strollers, kids crying, miserable, mom is miserable, and no-one is enjoying the museum and of course the child won't remember it.
If you have a baby, sorry, stay home for a few years or get a sitter for a 24 hour break at a local hotel with your spouse, but long trips unless it is a life and death emergency should be considered out.

That why I love Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains NP.
Wide open spaces. No crowd.

Yep, visit popular parks in shoulder season, visit unpopular parks in the peak season.

We brought our under 4 kids not national parks. We kept hikes short and had a bale out option in case the kid wasn't having the tent.
Also, kids melatonin helps.
Many parents are just bad people, regardless of having kids.

This is a rant that explains that you’re too out of shape to wander into the back country.
My wife and I backpacked GTNP and I don’t think we saw a single person on day two.

The 90’s were so much better. Every where you go is practically miserable now

Me. I went to Jackson last week for a few days and then booked it to the Winds for 5 nights.

Glacier is my favorite national park but tourist volume has ruined June-August trips there, so now we go in the shoulder season in mid September.
