I used to feed my old dog baby back rib bones often and never thought anything of it. He devoured them completely and no problems.
Now, fast forward to today I have my daughter's dog on long term babysitting because she is travelling too much to keep him right now. So i recently saw the recommendation that you dont feed dogs cooked bones and now I feel like he will die if I give him one. I did give him one not too long ago and he ate it, no issues.

Just because it didn’t once doesn’t mean you should do this

I was duck hunting in Mississippi one time and after the hunt one of the dogs was dragging his butt around on the grass and the guide walked over and stuck his boot on something sticking out of the dogs butt. The dog continued scooting away and a whole Walmart bag emerged from his butt. The day before some of the guys had caught and cleaned a bunch of crappie. They had put the entrails and left over fish parts in a Walmart bag and the dog had gotten to it and swallowed it whole. Damn thing passed all the way through him.

We had a BBQ for my FIL's birthday Sunday. I smoked ribs and grilled chicken. I came home hoping polish off the ribs and there were only 2 ribs left.

My dad had a lab and ran a campground. That lab ate everything - BBQ chickens, pork, beef, beans - anything that people cooked while camping. He never had a problem. Can’t ascertain much from a sample size of one but that’s a data point.
One day when he was about 10 years old he disappeared into the woods, as he always did, and never came back. We figured alligator, moccasin, or killed in a dog fight. But that dog had a great life. Never penned up and 100’s of acres of woods and rivers.

A vet would say that any cooked bones are at risk of splintering but our German Shepherd used to eat a rib bone like a potato chip and never had any problems.

Probably not.
During a routine tune-up, the vet said our Aussie would need her teeth cleaned the next time I brought her in. Since that entailed sedating her, I tried another approach. I started saving rib bones and giving them to her, along with the blade bones from a butt.
The next time I took her in, the vet looked at her teeth and asked me where I had them cleaned. Told her I didn't, just started giving her pork bones. The dog was happy, her teeth were clean, and it saved me money.
I did stop giving them to her during her last 6-8 months because she was having trouble digesting everything.

I have a German Shepard. All I know is that every time I give him bones he throws em' back up. So no more bones.
