We require our crews to take 15 min breaks every 45 minutes when the heat index gets above 95

30 and 30 when it gets above 105

the old baws grumble about "pussification of America", but there were at least 3 deaths in the area that I know of last summer in our industry from heat stroke

Scary sh*t baw glad you made it.

When I'm working outside i set a timer on my watch that goes off every 30 minutes. I drink a glass or bottle of water or water mixed with Gatorade every time it goes off. No exceptions. If I don't do that I'll get too focused on what I'm doing and forget to drink.

Last year I was outside in the south, late afternoon to early evening, playing tennis and nearly had a heat stroke. I was near the best shape of my life.

It doesn't matter how fit you are. You start to become dehydrated, with the sun beating down on you, heat and humidity enveloping you. It doesn't matter, at that point, if you have a six-pack or can run a marathon, your body is just out of gas.

I remember barely being able to move, barely being able to think, the nausea/dizziness, the constant cramping. It sucked.

I don’t and have never been affected by heat. But I’m also not a pussy.

I run 1 to 5 miles almost every day. It's planned, though. If you aren't properly hydrated it doesn't take much to get wiped out in the heat. Could only take a day or two of not paying attention to your water to really mess up. Also if he wasn't doing his exercising outside or in a garage gym he's probably not used to the heat. You could be in damn good shape and still end up with heat stroke if you aren't careful.

Also with the humidity your sweat isn't doing much to help cool you unless there's a good breeze.

Glad you're okay.. That sounded pretty serious..
I have learned to lay off the caffeine before cutting grass...

I have a deal with my elderly neighbor.. he rides his mower and I edge and blow. There is a lot of edging and clean up.. Yesterday after finishing the edging and weed eating my blower was really hard to start. After pulling the cord for about 3 minutes I was spent. Had to sit in the shade. Neighbor got his electric blower and finished up... I felt like shite with a headache the rest of the day. Getting old sucks...

Bunch of great advice in here. I’ll add that once you get that close to heat stroke or are experiencing heat stroke, you have to cool your core body temp as rapidly as possibly. Your elevated core temp is cooking your internal organs. If you were by yourself, it’s likely you couldn’t accomplish this but a cold tub full of ice and water around 55° for about 15min will prevent someone from dying from heat stroke. Some shouldn’t even be transported via ambulance until the core temp is lowered unless the ambulance crew has refrigerated IV fluids.

people are so soft
I never heard of them until experiencing a summer in Iraq. They had boxes of Drip Drop (which is a liquid IV equivalent but not as prevalent back home), which were a game changer.

Ever since then, I use them in the summer after going running or for yard work. I’ve never had a heat stroke either, but these will make you feel great despite the heat so why not take them?

Also really good for keeping the energy and swing speed up during a round of summer golf

Glad you survived to watch Bama go 8-4 this fall.

Gotta hydrate from the moment you wake up. Not just water either.
Need to prime your body with electrolytes.

You may want to invest in a self propelled mower and ditch the push. Makes using a push mower a lot easier.

If cutting lawns is a second job he should just get a riding mower. Am investment for sure but he can also cut more lawns.

This almost happened to my seventy something dad except he was putting in the dock on a hot day. His wife is a nurse and saw it coming so he didn’t get as bad as you.

I thought you had to gradually reduce temperature to prevent shock
