I had plenty of water but evidently wasn't replenishing it quick enough.
Glad you’re okay baw! My girl (medical field) said that if you’re not getting an electrolyte pack, then just replenishing water like that doesn’t do as much as you think.

First of all, glad you are okay and had a neighbor nearby to get you help quickly. Secondly, You need electrolytes, not just water. You lose a lot of potassium and sodium that you need to cool your body when it is so hot and you sweat a ton.
Good luck in the future and take care of yourself.

That seems like a short amount of time to get to heat exhaustion. Did you drink alcohol the night before or just not hydrate much the day before?
And more...

Same thing happened to me and I actually drank too much water and continued to flush out my system preventing me to produce any electrolytes. Need to drink more than just water to replenish what you have lost.

Can I assume that you're going to come get your shite out of my yard today?

Damn, you almost "died suddenly"...

It’s a scary feeling. I thought I was having a heart attack one time. My dad just said I wasn’t used to hard work anymore.

I had something similar happen to me last August working on a fence in direct sunlight when it was 105 with 80% humidity. I was drinking lots of fluids and taking breaks. I didn't get as bad as you, but I was certainly at heat exhaustion and was having severe cramps.
I did a lot of research and talked to a number of people. Here's what I learned. In my case, it was a loss of electrolytes that was making my situation worse. The cramping is caused by a lack of potassium. Potassium and magnesium are 2 of the electrolytes that are very important to maintain. I started making my own hydration drinks made of water, lemon juice, lime juice, honey, unrefined salt (the unrefined part is very important, as it has electrolytes that table salt does not), honey, and magnesium powder. This drink is very helpful to have along with plain water and Gatorade/Powerade. I also take Potassium supplements when I'm doing prolonged physical activity in the heat.

I have to start drinking water when i wake up to tolerate the heat. At least a quart or so before work starts. Then a quart an hour afterward. I can take whatever heat that comes if I drink plenty of water.
Laying off of the alcohol helps greatly if you aren’t already.
As long as you eat healthy all you need is water. That’s it. Ice cold water.

It is all about properly staying hydrated and taking in appropriate electrolytes to counter losses.
We successfully see people do that all the time.
Roofers, yard workers, construction workers, etc.
They are still working in the heat and there is no epidemic of heat stroke.
Stay hydrated. Take in appropriate electrolytes. Water is not sufficient by itself.

This wouldn’t have happened if you drove an ev instead of an f 250
ETA: you should’ve drank a beer to cool off

Glad you’re ok, but water ain’t gonna cut it outside in the afternoon in this heat.

I've run plenty of summer miles and know how to hydrate for it. Heat exhaustion/stroke from summer yard work will still sneak up on you. You've got to continually hydrate with electrolytes and take frequent breaks. It's no joke
Posted on 6/21/24 at 7:56 am to Scruffy
The main thing is to take plenty of breaks in the middle of the day. 30 minutes of work in the middle of the day is more taxing than you realize.

PFG shirts can be deadly on a hot day. All that evaporative cooling makes you think you aren’t as depleted as you are.

do people actually use those little packets on a regular basis in the summer? i didn't even grow up in the south and i don't need that

Wear appropriate clothing, head cover, sunscreen.
Drink plenty of fluids and take in appropriate electrolytes.
Make sure to eat as well.
I’ve made that mistake before last fall.
Cutting the yard and I hadn’t hydrated well enough or eaten.
Definitely bit me in the arse.
