Reading this I would say “idiot” is a very gentle way of putting it. You sound like a fricking retard.

On what planets is Identity Theft and Fraud considered a mistake? It was a willfully calculated act.

These threads are what TD was made for. OP better update.

As for the OP: have you at minimum frozen all of you and your wife and kids socials, pulled all credit reports, contacted reporting agencies, and put identity theft monitoring into place?

Plus, there’s a good chance you won’t have to pay it back if you involve the police.

And there's 0 chance she'll ever pay it back. She had to open in OP's wife's name for a reason.

My wife’s mother did this to the tune of 60k. Her dad was paying the minimum or just above for years until he got sick and then my wife started paying them.

After a few years of paying multiple card minimums I told my wife to call and try to work out a settlement with the card companies but they wouldn’t work with her. I then went out and bought her a new car and we had just built a new house so I told her to quit paying the cards. She just quit paying and after a few months the collector calls started rolling in and we just avoided them for another several months. Finally after about a year I told her to start working with the creditors and she was able to get plans to pay off the balance intrest free or pay a one time lump sum at a drastically reduced rate.

frick THIS. Get it written and notarized she did this. At the very minimum this needs to be a civil suit for payment of the credit card bill and damages/increased costs due to ruining your credit score.

What did she spend the money on?

If it's luxuries like vacations, jewelry, expensive dinners, you should file a police report.

If it's basic living expenses to get by, then you're talking about something else entirely.

What does she use the money for?

Does she have a job?

When did she open the CC? Was it recent ?

What’s the back story.

Dude this woman is going to absolutely wreck your life if you let this go completely unpunished. I legitimately feel sorry for your kids.

Your mother in law is a piece of shite and you shouldn't let your children anywhere near her. Get the frickin police involved and stop being a moron.

I'd say it's very likely that she's done this before. She just happened to get caught this time. That's a huge breach of trust and major boundary overstep. We'd probably never be the same again in terms of what our relationship is. Now what to do depends on how much this card is for, what is owed and her ability to pay it back ASAP. Also, close the damn card if you haven't already and get yourself some credit monitoring that will send you alerts on a regular basis.

I’d let your wife handle the lead but the biggest thing is why your MIL did this. Why did she need this credit?

Is she just a scammy secret POS?
Did she “impulse” need things and it went too far?
Is she using shopping as a form of “joy” to get over grief of dead husband? Etc.

Figure out why your MIL needed the credit, see if you can help get her making the payments/paying it off (NOT with your own money) ASAP and go from there...

Your wife having a good relationship with her mom, your kids with their grandmother is all really important and worth a lot of money. So do what you can but tread lightly and don’t get your wife pissed at you in the process
