Kinda matters. If it's $5k or less I could eat it and forgive but not forget. More than that and it's a real headache.

I understand what you're saying... but it's family. His wife's mother. You don't send family to jail unless the kill or rape. Other than that you handle it outside the law.

Seriously weird. The OP isn’t even participating in this 20 page thread loaded with the OTs fantasies.

having the mother arrested, prosecuted and sentenced would get the daughter off the hook for the financial charges. But the CC company would probably make you go through all of those steps before they cancelled the charges. The OP doesn't want to go that route.

Which is exactly why the MIL did it.

Because she knows there would not be consequences.

My wife and I just found out while looking to move that that my wife’s mom opened a credit card in her name and maxed it out. What sucks is we have a great relationship with her and she watches our kids but I’m confused how to move forward.

My MIL is super helpful with the kids and a great grandmother. I already called her out on it and she was apologetic and said she would pay it off but I know she can’t. My wife wants no relationship with her right now but people make mistakes and I want to work with her and fix the problem. I don’t mind helping her pay it off for the sake of keeping a sane household, but am I an idiot for trying to keep my MIL and wife at peace?

Probably the worst place to post this but I have 3 sisters and mom who are too emotional to give me advice.

No pics of wife

Update: Transferred credit card debt over to MIL’s name (Thanks Chad504boy). Hopefully she can sell the house and pay it off. We all had a long conversation with her and she is attending gambling rehab in Shreveport for 30 days. We also now have control of her funds moving forward. For everyone saying call the police or get the law involved, I think this solution is working fine for now. We’ll see how it goes after 30 days.

Screw calling the cops on a loved one. That would just hurt everyone involved.

I think this solution works out and I hope her rehabilitation goes well and she can shake back stronger financially than she was before

Most people agreed with the course of action the OP did. What they also said was if she didn’t agree to voluntarily take the debt call the cops.

OP, I hope it all
Works out.
