My MIL opened up a credit card in my wife’s name

My wife and I just found out while looking to move that that my wife’s mom opened a credit card in her name and maxed it out. What sucks is we have a great relationship with her and she watches our kids but I’m confused how to move forward.
My MIL is super helpful with the kids and a great grandmother. I already called her out on it and she was apologetic and said she would pay it off but I know she can’t. My wife wants no relationship with her right now but people make mistakes and I want to work with her and fix the problem. I don’t mind helping her pay it off for the sake of keeping a sane household, but am I an idiot for trying to keep my MIL and wife at peace?
Probably the worst place to post this but I have 3 sisters and mom who are too emotional to give me advice.
No pics of wife

You must now sleep with your mother in law.

Are you talking 500 or 5000?

Have sex with your FIL to get even with her.

I’d help her pay it off and say the next time anything happens that you’d be reporting it to police
Sounds like there are some underlying issues that need to be addressed. Does she have a spending problem? Any mental health issues? That’s pretty twisted to do to your own kid

You’re an idiot dude. She’ll just do it again, and not backing your wife was a moronic move.

Does it matter?
ETA: I guess I should add that it’s the principle of the matter. It doesn’t matter if it’s $50 or $50,000. She’s a thief and you simply must put a stop to this shite and force her to pay you back every plugged nickel.

I mean, this seems like the only logical solution.

We need pictures of your mother-in-law (and wife and sisters) to give you the appropriate advice.

I know exactly what you're thinking. You're wondering how cutting her out will effect you. No more free babysitter etc.. It's not worth it. Step away and follow your wife's lead. She'll eventually come back around. How close is he to his mom?

The amount def matters here. And can you afford to pay it off for her?
Wife needs to freeze her social ASAP.
