This was the answer even before AI. Unless you want to rot in Corporate and get pushed off the ladder when your turn 50, unless you navigated your way to the C-Suite.

i was a licensed plumber before i got my college degree (mechanical engineering).... but because of that experience (plumber/pipefitter) i am indispensable in my current position.
I was a licensed electrician almost 2 years before getting a BSEE after 4 years of simultaneously going to trade school and college and working full time - it took me 2 years after finishing trade school to finish college. It has served me well also and I too am indispensable in my current position because I work for myself as a consultant. Unfortunately not many 18 year olds are going to go to school 4-5 hours 4 nights a week while also working 40+ hours a week in a physically demanding job. In fact no one in their right mind would do it if they had any options. At best it is unrealistic BUT it is not unrealistic to learn a trade and when trade school is done go right into a 4 year degree program that is tied to that trade.
I only worked as an electrical engineer for about 6 months and it was tied directly to my having worked in the same plant as an electrician while in school. I realized pretty damn quick that I was working the same or more hours for significantly less money and nowhere near the benefits as an engineer compared to working as an electrician. I went back to school and got a business degree with a PM concentration, took another 18 months of school, and THAT made a significant difference in my earning potential. I had been in the trade about 10 years when I finished that degree up had already worked my way up to superintendent so moving into project management with 2 degrees was a natural progression. It has made a world of difference in my career and it is all built on my having gone to trade school directly out of high school. With that piece missing it would have taken years to reach the same salary levels.
For those among us who aren't boomers or Gen X all of that education cost me about $20K LOL. 2 BS degrees and 4 years of trade school. I paid for it out of pocket except about $5k on credit cards toward the end of the EE degree. When old farts tell y'all to shut up about student loans and work you way through college keep that in mind....all in 12 years equivalent of higher education and vocational school for $20k. Young people are right to complain.

Have you ever had a corporate job?

You don’t even want to know.
ETA I could write a book from my corporate experience. Might have to try it once AI makes all Director-level folks redundant. If anyone out there can still read.

This job market is trash. No denying that at all.
But in a small way, I'm glad that high school diploma graduates that work hard and make good decisions can make some decent money. For many years there's been a push that without a bachelor's degree you'll be flipping burgers for the rest of your life.
My BIL makes $250k in sales with a high school diploma and his son ( quite possibly the dumbest human I've known) makes over $100k busting his arse doing pest control.
I don't have a degree or a piece of paper to my name, but I have hustled and am in a good place. My brother is on the opposite spectrum. A Master's in engineering, then went to UVA and is a patent lawyer.
Here's to the little man making shite happen.

Anyone that deems themselves “indispensable” is so far removed from positional decisions that they don’t have the insight to understand that they really are not what they think.

Overhiring from covid, but they're going to put a pretty face on it and say that it's because they're investing in AI.
I'm sure Copilot is just tearing up the AI charts.

so maybe see what impact it has to the U.S. before writing college off altogether? Also, those who don't go to college will be way behind, as, like you mentioned, they will be competing against a lot of others that do have a college background.
Instead of college go to military. Gonna need to learn to fight our robot overlords

Which is the ideal way to do college, but they constantly push on young people that use half their brain that they need to figure out what they are going to do for the rest of their lives at 18 and to take on huge loans for the college experience. I felt "mature" when I was in college, but looking back on it now in my mid 30s, it's high school with no parent supervision.

IT job market is already flooded with former MSFT, Amazon, Google, Netflix, Oracle, Meta, etc employees trying to find work. This wasn't going to last forever which is why I'm getting out in the next 2 to 3 years. The salaries and bonuses aren't sustainable and these jobs despite the high compensation are not healthy for the employees. One of the divisions of the company I work for has had a Sr Global SysAdmin and Sr Collaboration Manager die in their sleep this year. They were not fat obese slobs or on any medications they died likely due to stress and being worked to death. It isn't worth it. Both were in their early to mid 50's.

Very similar pathway. I went to apprentice school while going to college and while working. Worked 24-32 hrs a week. Took 4-6hrs of courses at LSU and went 1 night a week to apprenticeship school. Did a coupe of years of HVAC/Plumbing design then went to project managing HVAC/Plumbing construction and some design build. Also spent time estimating, layout/detailing, CAD shops.
Basically every part of the HVAC/Plumbing industry.
32+ years in the same industry.
