I went to a McDonald's in Memphis and there was nothing out in store. Not even straws or napkins. Everything was behind the counter due to homeless and theft.
I don’t think it’s completely related to theft or being cheap on refills, but rather a change in the majority of people just not eating inside a fast food restaurant anymore.
The one in Fairhope is actually the same way. Building caught on fire a few years ago, and after the rebuild, they basically eliminated everything inside. Only a small seating area, mobile order pickup station, and computer kiosks to order inside. No soda stations or anything. Extremely spartan.

Honestly, this is the Chic-fil-a model. Nobody has a problem with them.

The Memphis one is a full size, full service store. They just can't keep anything out in front due to riff raff.

Not sure I'll be alive then.
I'll play it by ear.
I'll play it by ear.

You are the closest to getting this correct. It has nothing to do with theft; that number falls into the noise of McDonald's operating costs.
In the 70-90s, McDonald's expanded the size of the restaurants, engaging people to come in and stay, easy/free drink refills got them staying longer and ordering more food. Profits went up.
Now over 75% of McDonald's food is ordered through the drive-thru or delivery. People aren't coming in and eating, and don't do birthday parties, etc., at nearly the rate they used to. The biggest single line item in the McDonald's corporation budget is property taxes because they own the majority of their properties. Given the situation, as they build and renovate locations, they are reducing square footage and their property taxes. Removing the self-serve counter and making them "spartan," as this poster mentioned, saves them huge amounts of money and doesn't impact the service of the vast majority of customers.
It is the governmental property tax "theft" that is driving this not the water cup ruse theft.

McDonald’s has a unique dispensing approach that they utilize for the fountain. They do not use the standard bag-in-a-box.
Only for Coke is this true. Coke is usually stored in a 75 gallon tank. Most restaurants have two or three to limit down times and deliver dates. The rest is bag in a box. Most are 5 gallons and some were 2 1/2 gallons. McDonald’s is also a pioneer in automation as they also have an Automated beverage filling system where based on the order it will grab the correct cup and and fill it with ice and beverage on a conveyor system. Stuff was state of the art when my restaurant got it in 2002.
Now Wendy’s and Burger King are different. They have the ink cartridge type of syrups since they have the Coke Freestyle Machine.
The conspiracy is that Coke using that machine and the data it collects to see what new combinations of drinks people could come up with on their own.

Back in the day I had a buddy who kept a McDonalds and Burger King cup in his car and if he was around when they were busy, he would go into one of them, with his cup, fill it up with Dr. Pepper and leave.
One day, evidently the manager saw him walk in with the cup and watched him fill it up and went up to him and told him to throw it in the garbage and if he sees him in there again he would officially file a trespass on him. It was the location he passed by on a regular basis, but after that he stopped doing it, but he got away with it for several months..
But I am surprised it has taken them this long. When you go through the drive thru and order a drink that's all you get. If you are inside people can put less ice which means more drink, then they can go back and get refills and fill up before they leave. When you break that down, compared to those who order through the drive thru, those who dine in likely drink a lot more, which results in more cost.
Remember when you could go into McDonalds and get as much ketchup and jelly as you wanted?

This is code for Coke has jacked up the price of coke and 20 an hour labor is cutting into profits, so we must make things more cost effective for our shareholders and so our CEO can fly on a private jet to the Caribbean for a six week summer vacation.
If that's what you really think it means you are retarded.

They should probably focus more on fixing their ice cream machines which seemingly haven’t worked in 30 years

I'm sure this has nothing to do with their buildings looking like a cross between a DMV and the Gulag.

I get why they are making the move, but it is just adding the list of reasons to never go into one of these places.
I have zero reason to visit a McDonald’s; it might as well be a Aggie souvenir shop to me.
I hate to join Teresa Heinz in any commonality but there it is.
