I could see this when drinks were $1 for a large but the same cup is nearly $3 now. I used to stop weekly for a crispy diet coke as a treat without thinking twice when running errands. I haven't done that in a couple of years and I won't even order a drink the rare times we pick up biscuits in the morning because it pisses me off.

This is code for Coke has jacked up the price of coke and 20 an hour labor is cutting into profits, so we must make things more cost effective for our shareholders and so our CEO can fly on a private jet to the Caribbean for a six week summer vacation
This is some Little Man envy here.

What does "make things cost effective for our shareholders" mean? The shareholders own the company and McDonald's brass answers to them so it makes sense to keep them happy and invested.

People also have the option to not buy McDonald's. No one has a "right" to McDonald's products or services at a price they think they should get to pay.

Habits like ordering water but filling up a coke?

Habits like not filling it to the brim with ice before dispensing a meager amount of soda.
