except thats not the case. sure it may be different cognnitive abilities than what you are used to or what you valued growing up but that doesnt make it less important

as far as the norway study...wtf does that have to do with kids in the united states?

and no offense but you live in alaska and you are talking about the dangers of isolationist trends?????

Standardized tests are awful. There is a law now in TN that if you don't pass as a thrid grader you have to be held back or go to summer school. But these were all Covid kids who had to do Zoom school the first part of elementary. Thats not fair.

Parents are largely uninvolved in their child’s education. The amount of times I get yelled at that “I didn’t know they were failing” when I post multiple grades with detailed comments and feedback to improve their grades every week.

I’ll say that the education system’s response to COVID 19 is when the average Joe finally realized that public education is not actually about the kids.

This. Public education is about the public educators. Covid made this loud and clear to anyone who was paying attention.

I'm not crazy about basing retention on a standardized test result versus actual developmentally appropriate benchmarks.

Aside from that though, I don't see an issue with retention if it's actually needed. The law reads that they would have to show, after summer school instruction, that they have "adequate growth". I don't see an issue with that if growth is more strictly defined (the language of the law is too vague).

Realistically, if educators believe a student should be retained it shouldn't be up to the parent if that is allowed. That's a major issue here in elementary schools. A teacher can recommend a child be retained but the parent decides whether it happens or not.

That's part of the reason you end up with 6th graders who are 2-3 grades behind in reading/math and it's not realistic to expect a teacher to make that up in a year.

Those tests are incredibly basic and easy.

Yea, I can't really speak on it because we aren't at the level until the fall. I just know my kid is incredibly smart, but will do awful on those tests because he can't focus for more than 5 seconds to save his life.

And even those this has been trending for years, I definitely think Covid hurt the young ones. Everyone was navigating something new.

Cull the scores from the 20 largest cities in the country and you'll see the scores double.

Another affect of shutting down schools for a year and a half and just sending kids to the next grade. The worst affects of Covid were on children grades 1-7. We wont be done seeing the affects of Covid win education for another 10 years.

This fits nicely with the ending of merit as the first priority for college acceptance and a lot of hiring decisions.

Given the replacement initiative at the border and the alphabet people push I bet DEI scores are higher than ever! They have to be, there are fewer straight white guys.

I think there is a pre-2008 recession and post-2008 recession line of thinking with this. Pre-2008, it was "go to college or fail in life"
right, but I still hear people my age and younger parrot that line and I always want to call bullshite.

Also, I moved around a bit and every school system I was in still had a robust shop/industrial arts program and a career center with automotive, electrical, etc. programs available.

It reminds me of when people say “why didn’t we learn about this is school?”. We did, you weren’t paying attention.
