I’m quite confident this was coming, even if Covid never happened

100% this was coming Covid is just an excuse the teacher’s unions are using.

You have to hand it to the teacher's unions and the Dept. of Ed - when they destroy something, they destroy it.

The last time math performance was this low for 13-year-olds was in 1990.

Seeing how I was 13 in the spring testing season of 1990, and my youngest is 13 right now, I'd have to say there must be "a bunch a reely dum utter students cuz were all reely gud at rithmatic an reeding, to."

I think there's probably also a tie to age cohort size/timing... mid 70s saw the lowest birthrates ever to that date, only to be eclipsed by the late 2000s. That's probably tied to economic opportunities (un)available to parents that lingered throughout their children's early lifetimes, not even counting any additional Covid BS.

Parents have stopped (or never started) reinforcing these things at home and have become completely dependent on teachers and schools to do so.

Well said. This is an indictment on the absolute state of parents moreso than the school systems or even the government.

Think mathematical difficulties have been going on for a while. Watch the mental stresses occurring in the average cashier after giving cash and coins for a purchase. They typically have to rely on the register or even a calculator to tell them how much change to give back. Example: Giving cash and pennies so you will get a quarter back in change;

I have called parents for student misbehavior and have been told that they don't know what to do about their child. What kind of BS is that?

And liberal teachers unions - I hate them.

And the Amish elementary school kids test among the top in PA. They are taught by junior high school and HS girls.

Screw teachers. Pay them for the hours worked.

Or keep the same number of days off, which is a fricking shitload, not just summer, and spread it out more.

Year around school has the same amount of breaks, just spread out instead of one big summer chunk.

A few years back they converted a couple schools to year around calendars here and the pushback wasn’t from teachers. It was from parents, largely because of them feeling they shouldn’t get time off throughout the year. When they let the parents vote whether to keep it or get rid of it, they overwhelmingly voted to go back to the old calendar.
