Because early maps were primarily used for navigation, they emphasized getting the coastlines as correct as possible.

It was for navigation, but it's actually for direction if you're navigating. You keep a constant heading, it's a straight line on a Mercator.

Then you clearly should have known what a Mercator Projection is.

If Mexico is that far away from the US, and separated by a giant moat - why do we need a border wall?

looks like the closer to the equator the more accurate the size

Correct, the closer a landmass is to the poles, the more its size is exaggerated.

never understood why Greenland is projected so bigly

The closer something is to the poles, the more exaggerated it is. The reason is all longitude lines meet at the poles and diverge as you approach the Equator.

At the Equator, 1 degree longitude is about 70 miles. If you draw a 360-mile circle with the North Pole as the center, each longitude line is 1 mile apart.

The Mercator projection puts everything on a square grid so no matter how far north you go the longitude lines are spaced the same, instead of converging. So polar landmasses are stretched out.

Look at a globe next to an atlas to see the difference.

It really is. If you want to highlight the inaccuracies of mercator projection, try showing actual proportions of countries and don’t just shrink them from the mercator.

In gnomes’s map, it’s most noticeable to me trying to match up the U.S. and Canadian border.
