What is a "Mercator projection"? A mathematical term? A model based on climate change? A historic estimate based on limited knowledge?

It’s impossible to create a perfect flat map from a sphere. So, certain kinds of maps emphasize certain attributes, depending on what they are used for. Because early maps were primarily used for navigation, they emphasized getting the coastlines as correct as possible. This meant that landmasses with complex coastlines were bigger, to show the detail, while landmasses with relatively simple coastlines were smaller.

We all got used to that look over the course of several hundred years, so it’s what we most commonly use.

Frankly, you were all taught this in school at one point. The problem is that it was likely sometime around the third grade
