Look, we all know other jobs go long, traffic happens, whatever....

LEARN TO SHOW UP ON TIME OR CALL ME

Dicks.

its just not that hard to call me if you're going to be late rather than waiting for me to track you down an hour after your scheduled time and you're still across the frickin county.

This is why many of them prefer to be their own bosses.

Most of them are borderline retarded and unemployable otherwise.

Is this a one-off??… if so, it’s shite that takes precedent over your project… that’s the way business works(especially this business)

I upvoted without reading the OP.
It's amazing that more of them aren't 6 feet under.

Tell me about it. I’m sitting here at my camp waiting on a guy I have used before- I hired him to build a set of steps- it looks like my 14 yo framed it up.

Actually, my 14 yo would have done better. And this guy is not cheap.

Where have the craftsmen gone?

They’re mostly complete idiots. I hired a plumber to fix a few things around the house and upgrade my service for my boiling pot and I ended up having to go back and fix half of what he fricked up. The one exception is my HVAC guy who’s solid AF. But it took me forever to find him and I sifted through multiple idiots before I found him.

Drywall, Painters, Concrete folks, Pool Builders are the worst

Electrical, Plumbers, HVAC are better

The rest are generally somewhere in-between.

It’s tough for a homeowner who needs a particular craft done only once to have to navigate the variety of individuals who do that type of work.

GCs get to know which subs are reliable and professional.

There isn’t any precedent that prohibits you from calling or sending a text message explaining why you aren’t where you’re supposed to be.
Guarantee you, you won’t be having any “precedents” holding you up when it’s time to get paid. So send a fricking message if you’re gonna be late or a no show you trashy bastard.

Didn’t say their was… was just offering an explanation as to why he probably hasn’t made it… with that said you scheduled on a Saturday morning… this implies this is extra “on the side work” I’ll get to you when I get to you

They have zero communication skills.

I believe it’s a requirement of the profession.

So communicate when youll be getting to it... it isnt that hard. The rest of the world operates by arriving at the agreed upon time.... to OPs point contractors have zero respect for time at all.

Then you'll really hate subcontractors. Their behavior is beneath even contractors.

They want the big jobs such as room or larger scale renovations.
I gave up on Denham painters with either ridiculously high estimates or low-ball estimates where they always have an excuse for putting off the job.

Completely agree about how bad so many are at thejust basic courtesy of not leaving someone waiting.

About the "where have the craftsmen gone" question. They still exist. I know a lot of extremely talented carpenters, painters etc...

However, the squeeze on the middle class means they can only afford to do the same jobs they used to do for really high end / price tag jobs.
