my group has ran R2R2R a few times and inexperienced hikers will clog up the single file lane in some precarious spots.

they got stuck behind a group that is taking their sweet time and it causes issues.

Are you people fricking idiots? Is this not a free fricking country anymore? If he wanted to have 500 Americans join him that’s his prerogative. Just because some government employee park rangers want to limit groups to sizes of 11(seems quite arbitrary in number) doesn’t mean all you limp dicks need to fall in order. It’s not like they are going there to tarnish the place. This is still a free country. In that same week span there will be THOUSANDS of people in those same woods.

Wake up you fricking pussies.

The possibility that three hundred people take off in a limited period in the morning would make for traffic jams. You can't just leave at any old time and get to the bottom before dark, for much of the year.

If the group hasn't planned, or acclimated to the heat, how many park rangers would it take to bring the medical emergencies out?

Insert your own snide remarks about the perceived superiority of those who live in Washington State here. I have too many to chose from.

Have you ever been in NOLA at the start of the Marathon? side streets are wall to wall runners, all hup hup huppping even those eight or nine streets offset from the starters. You can tell it's gonna (sic) happen when the porta potties arrive en mass a week beforehand. No portapotties in the Grand Canyon. Probably some really weird nitrate deposits.

Good to know you don't just suck on the golf forum, but rather, infect others with your ignorance.

I would imagine so.

There is a book about all the various types of deaths in the Grand Canyon btw. Very interesting read.

The week before we went last July a frickin physician from Louisiana died of dehydration/heat stroke hiking the canyon alone. You'd think a doctor would be the last mfer to die like that. Or maybe it's the vice versa b/c of ego. but it freaked us out ahead of our trip.

was it a hike or a protest?

It’s clearly a protest. His group of 12 got shot down bc he was 1 person to many.

I fully support peaceful hike protest on public lands.

I think it’s because the trails can’t handle that much traffic, and people will end up walking next to the trails and widening them, which is bad for the environment. These semi-arid areas just can’t handle that much traffic.

What does he gain from bringing that many people?

Also why is the park service limiting groups to 11. Everyone knows that COVID is virtually none transmissible outdoors.

National parks are actually very dangerous places where hundreds of people get killed every year. Yeah, 139 people on a Grand Canyon tour is asking for disaster.

Well that’s stupid. The bottom of GC isn’t where you decide to go hike alone.

Underrated post you win the internet for today.

Upon reading this at first my thoughts were "What the hell is the big deal? Who cares? Shouldn't we be encouraging the exercise and usage of our National Parks?"

The Covid reasoning is nonsense. But I hadn't considered the wear and tear concern on the trail as well as resources being used. I assume they've got things budgeted/available/whatever for X number of people day/week/year. Seems a bit capricious but rules are rules and if someone is going to ruin one of our natural wonders for everybody then by all means, put him on blast.

I feel like the OP should be clarified as well

he is only banned for 2 years from national parks in northern Arizona

the OP makes it seem like he got a lifetime ban from all national parks

It's why they take rule violations seriously among other reasons Some of the fines and bans that get handed out are pretty wild, but understandable IMHO.

Yeah, do you know how narrow those trails are in the Grand Canyon? Let’s put 500 people at a time on them. Going to be easy keeping track of 500 people as well, especially when stupid kids are involved. 312 people die in national parks every year. You’re the real idiot here and would get people killed. In all likelihood your final words will either be “Hey y’all, watch this!” or “Hold my beer!”

Wake up from what, dipshit?

It’s the Grand Canyon not the Vegas strip. It’s about having respect for the park, nature, and the people trying to enjoy the peace and quiet of it all.

You think these people are going to be stewards of Leave No Trace Principles? Yeah I’m sure they will be really mindful of stepping on sensitive plants or littering while they’re Facebook Live-streaming and making TikTok videos. Give me a break. Go back to the mall.
