Even if your conspiracy theories are true it has nothing to do with the actual issue at hand here.
Large groups ruin trails. It is just that simple. A classic example is the Na Pali Coast trail on Kauai. You can hile the first two miles without a permit and the trail is every widening and in places, the trail is 40-50ft wide. Past the point of permit requirements is narrow and pristine off-trail. The difference in the experience is amazing. People just don't think about the cumulative impact of throngs of people.

Here's a YouTube video of one of the people doing the hike.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY8RtjO4prA
FYI: When she said she's at mile 27, she was closer to 15, with about 9 miles to go, all up hill (Elevation change about 5,000 ft). She started at 3:30 am. And likely finished 10 pm to midnight.
If you noticed, she didn't film herself hiking the last 4 miles. It was because she was tired as frick and very likely in pain.
I guarantee this a BEFORE photo.

People are either dummies or feel entitled and above the law/regs.

I speak from my experiences and what I have witnessed and worked personally. I see where you are coming from and the whole idea of UN creating world heritage sites-never thought was a good idea.

I saw bits of video. The overhead pic of them spelling out R2R is kinda cringey imo
I bet other smaller groups hiking that day saw them and were just thinking “oh for fricks sake, seriously?!”

That seems ridiculous, also very anti-American
Also, a hiking group that large is trashy

Criminal charges for this are absolutely ridiculous.
