With a family of five we typically get a VRBO. I’ve never had a problem with them. I typically ignore any chore list because it’s not my job to make it efficient for the cleaning crew.

The only bad experience I had was traveling with a group to Ann Arbor for a football game we rented a house through Airbnb. The place was nice but I didn’t like the fact that I was staying in someone’s house. It felt weird having a refrigerator full of their stuff, sleeping in little kids rooms, etc.

It’s only advantageous for a large group.

If I'm traveling alone for work, I much prefer a hotel for safety reasons for the amenities like a bar and restaurant. We do rent AirBnBs a couple of times a year for work group trips to conventions or shows and it really is actually cheaper and fun. I like it as we cook group meals and have all our supplies there but, what I don't like is that the AirBnB owners trying to attract families to houses, almost always have a couple of the bedrooms staged with bunk beds or single kid beds which stinks as someone is always having to room with other people or sleep in an uncomfortable bed meant for children. I'm an adult not a college student and while I like my co-workers, I don't really want to share a room with another person nor, do I want to sleep in an uncomfortable twin bed. Of course the boss loves it, he gets the master/prime bedroom with the plush mattress.

Or if you're staying for a long time. The fees aren't as big of an issue for the total bill and the amenities are nicer than a hotel for a long term stay.

Airbnb’s only make sense now in places where hotels are not available, you want to keep a large group together with multiple bedrooms, or you’re going to be in a place for a while and want access to a kitchen instead of restaurants. Mountain cabins, 30A style beach rentals, etc. They also help when traveling with pets as I’ve found a few with fenced yards for the dog.

Other than that, no thanks. Not worth the hassle. When I travel with the family, I’ll just book a Residence Inn or Homewood/Embassy Suites and be done with it. Cheaper, usually nicer, and with free breakfast. As someone who travels for work 120+ nights a year, I just don’t want to deal with researching Airbnb’s for regular travel to make sure they aren’t in a ghetto. Using the Marriott app is simple and I know what to expect.

Airbnb’s initial concept was a winner - rent out an unused guest room. Greed turned it into hotels run by amateurs as a side gig.

t used to be cheap but now most airbnbs are more expensive than a hotel with all the extra fees. With a hotel a lot of times you’ll pay less, have more amenities, and will be in a centrally located city.

This. AirBNB was awesome when it was cheaper way to be in your own space, and you had a few days to spend.

But now they cost the same if not more than hotels, you are expected to clean up the place plus pay a cleaning fee (for what if you clean it yourself), and usually are in a much less convenient spot.

So frick that. the AirBNB owners did it to themselves. I stay in hotels exclusively again after using AirBNB for years.

You're lucky. I had one where the owners decided to put in a new smart lock that they had no experience with which ended up in locking me out of the unit when I got back at 1 a.m. because they issued a one day code that expired at midnight instead of a multi-day code. Needless to say I could not get them at that hour and had to stay in a hotel. That was one of my very last AirBNB stays.

Pick the correct AirBnB and you won’t have an issue.

This. Airbnb can mislead you as well, the company takes a huge cut and lacks support.

AirBNB is really only useful for big family trips... or when you travel overseas. We used them for the entirety of our two month trip to Italy this summer and it was 10x better and cheaper than trying to stay at a hotel. In the US they really do gouge you though.

The only time I’ve actually enjoyed and Air BnB was in Dahlonega and Blue Ridge, GA. Outside of a small mountain town, there’s really not a need to get one. In those locations, they were priced about the same as other cabin rentals and just went with the best setup.

Yeah hotels suck. 6 of us require 2 bathrooms anywhere we stay. We've had some randomly weird Airbnb places, but space is required.

My AirBNB is killing it. $425/night plus cleaning fees. Thanks for all your hard work doing the dishes for my cleaning crew.
