Airbnbs are partly why the housing market is the way it is now. You wanna go live in a cute mountain town on a decent budget? Well, ya can’t bc folks own multiple homes in these cute mountain towns and Airbnb them, pricing out the locals. This is a MASSIVE problem that’s being addressed all over the west, including here in Montana.

Bozeman Votes to Ban Short Term Rentals
Whitefish Takes Aim at Illegal Short Term Rentals Columbia Falls Has More than 600 Short Term Rentals
Missoula City Council Looks to Restrict Short Term Rentals

With that said, if these Airbnb owners are using this as a tactic to keep people from moving out west it may seem to be working, but it ain’t. The ‘forcing’ of building new and affordable housing developments continue to threaten wildlife habitat, so what they’re hoping to “conserve” (population limits) is actually harming what brought them here in the first place (the wild).

I’ve had some bangin AirB&B’s. They were for 6 months to a year though, and I wasn’t paying for them. One in Hawaii (on the beach), and a killer bungalow In Idaho.

I enjoyed Airbnb at first but I hate what it's become. I've stayed at probably 8 Airbnb's. The first few was what it was meant to be, you rented out a room from an owner. It was cheap and nice as a younger single guy traveling by himself.

The last couple I stayed at were more of what they are now. Whole homes designed just to be Airbnb's. You are still staying with other people but they are people you don't know. To me that doesn't make it any different than a hotel.

The last Airbnb I stayed at was in 2018 in Philly. Great location near Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and really nice row house residence, but very tiny bed and had to share a bathroom. You had two door codes. The door code to the row house unit and then another door code to your specific room.

Anymore Airbnb's are just as expensive if not more expensive than hotels and you just don't have the same level of amenities.

I feel like Airbnb has now exclusively gone to the Vrbo model. You can tell they absolutely want to cater to big groups traveling who will rent out entire houses or condo/townhome units. Anymore I think if you're traveling in a group of 5 or 6 an Airbnb can make sense. But if you're someone like me who either just travels in a group of 3 or 4 and many times does solo travel, Airbnb's are just too expensive.

Agreed. My complaint is that they want as much/more than a hotel, charge me $100-200 in cleaning fees, and give me a laundry list of chores to do before I leave.

What in the frick is the cleaning charge for if I have to wash the sheets and take out the trash and wash the dishes? Who has time to do all that crap on vacation?

AirBnB's are only good for bachelor trips and anything involving 6+ people, where you need room for more activities

You can spread all the BS costs out across all the people and make it similarly priced to what a hotel would have run each person.

Hotels are supreme for 95% of travel though.

I think originally they found a niche for middle class travel - people who couldn't afford a nice hotel and didn't want to stay in a rundown filthy Super 8 with drug dealers and hookers fighting in the hallway. So they dressed up a 3rd option and tried to make it hip.

But now the cost is the same as chain hotels with more hassle, fewer amenities, etc. It's not worth it. But there are exceptions like when you want an extended group under one roof, or you're in a pinch, or you are visiting a place off the beaten path.

you haven’t stayed in the right ones. the air BNB's I stayed in with friends for bachelor trips were historically awful and made me wish I had just shelled out more money for a hotel, but I have stayed in some that are next level.

there is a NOLA themed condo building in downtown Hot Springs that was amazing and really added to our trip. We've also stayed on a houseboat on the Ouchita river that was all updated, clean comfortable and an experience in and of itself.

I think what pushed me over the line with airbnb is the communication every host started requiring. You book something, they start chatting with you, have to list why you're coming, who's with you, so on and so forth. Then they give you the grace of confirming your booking.

I despise them esp in neighborhoods. Resort areas, lake houses, I get it. I’m currently fighting my neighbor who airbnbs his house out. Just a residential neighborhood. I don’t need a different fraternity staying next door every weekend esp in the burbs.

is never as good as a hotel. The furniture and beds are never that comfortable. Generally when I do it I am there to be with group of people or family but just not enough room to chit chat or watch TV. Also always wonder how clean they are. Am i in the minorit

I completely prefer a hotel. I particularly prefer famous hotels with lots of amenities on property. I like the daily room maintenance and room service options. I have no desire to cook my own meals or grocery shop while on vacation. I have little desire to rent a house with a large group of people. I would much rather the group stay at a hotel and have individual rooms.

I always got the impression that the people trying to save a few dollars when traveling prefer the Airbnb. People who make groceries on vacation rather than order room service are the ones trying to save a few dollars.

If I’m traveling with my family, I want multiple bedrooms. Wife won’t let kids stay in hotel room without us so it’s Airbnb

Alone and I’m staying in a hotel

We always got a suite or put the nanny in the kids room. Last thing I want to do is wake up on vacation and start feeding the children. When the kids were young room service in the morning saved a lot of stress.

Prefer (nice, full service) hotels when possible.

AirBNBs are alright but I find them much better when it's in a locale that a) has a lot of need for rental property (think 30A or similar) and/or b) have good management companies that run them and that do this all day every day (ie, not a one off manager or small management company).

They tend to go together. The competition forces properties to renovate, refresh, etc. and the management companies keep things moving smoothly, maintenance in order, etc.

Nah I’m with you brother. It used to be cheap but now most airbnbs are more expensive than a hotel with all the extra fees. With a hotel a lot of times you’ll pay less, have more amenities, and will be in a centrally located city.

That and you don't have to really clean up at a hotel.

Unless you're going somewhere with a big group/family, hotels are 100% the way to go to me.
