I live in Texas which has no state income tax but high property taxes. The property taxes are assessed at the county and city level and are mostly geared to funding the local public schools. I've also lived in Kansas and they did the same thing with property taxes. Over a period of time, the best public school districts stand out and become known to everyone. People who value good education (and can afford it) are more likely to move to those areas. Conversely, people who don't give a shite tend to end up in the areas with the worse performing schools. The school districts are not at the county level. There should be about 5 school districts within a heavily populated county. The school districts compete with one another and residents are free to move to the school district of their choice. Competition is good. This is how you get your St. George!

Wouldn't work in Louisiana, any time we have a good public school we ship in undesirables from outside of the school district in order to bring the public school down to acceptable levels for Louisiana.

These kinds of statements are pointless without some kind of assessment on other forms of taxation.

We are the highest taxed state, per capita, in the United States, and we have the highest public employee to citizen ratio than any state in the nation.

There is a reason why LA is one of the few "red states" that has not seen a population increase in the last 5 years.

I saved some on my lawnmower a while back just by waiting to buy it until I visited my parents in another parish since their sales tax rate is lower. It wasn't much but I'm a man of principle.

It’s also the second smallest parish (population) in the state.

I was surprised when I couldn’t find where to register & was told they didn’t collect

And the absolute least to show for it too. A lesson in big government leaving you only with lint in your pockets but ever more and more promises to simply stay in power and fleece you for more and more to come.

I just wish we would have it in price. It's so nice when you travel and something is 5 you pay 5. Not 5.48
