I'm looking for this sign. It was everywhere when I was a kid, and I know a couple of folks who have them in personal collections. I have found ONE on eBay, but they're asking a mere $1,399.00. I have not seen one anywhere else for sale.

From the sign's eBay description:
quote:

This metal sign is a unique piece from the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair. The sign features a color palette of blue, white, gray, and silver. Made in New Orleans, this collectible item is perfect for historical memorabilia enthusiasts. At nearly 40 years old, it shows some scuffs. It was originally made to point the way to the Fair on the streets of New Orleans. It is 24 inches by 24 inches and is the thickness of a regular Stop Sign.

LINK. Anyone know where either this sign or a reasonable reproduction may be available for sale?

Not an OT Baller, so my budget is probably $400 max.

I think you mean $350 with some wiggle room.

I was gonna say "just have one fabricated" but then I noticed that little TM icon on there. That's little TM is your indication that if you try to make one yourself, you will end up in Pampy Barre's special gimp room.

I wish you luck on your endeavor, mate. Forgive me for a slight hijack, but I also came of age during the New Orleans World's Fair, and was such a fan of the memories that I actually lived in the historic Federal Fibre Mills condominiums on South Peters Street for several years. To that end, I also embrace all things of that era in New Orleans.

The World's Fair logo matching the old New Orleans Breakers logo reminded me of a topic that I've not addressed in a while. It has always bummed me out that the New Orleans Hornets rebrand didnt either:

A. Go with "Breakers" as the new nickname, as it works on three levels (NOLA history, Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf, and the basketball double entendre of "fast break")

or

B. If going with Pelicans, use the lovable Seymore D. Fair mascot, which is actually fairly close to the Celtics mascot. Have him spinning a basketball on his talon. A well-appointed Pelican-about-town, Seymour would always be quick to offer a smile and nod his ample pouched beak in the direction of the Smoothie King Centre to assist visiting fans. He's much more loveable than Pierre, and the "fierce looking bird" mascot that the Pelicans ultimately picked is very cliched and is virtually indistinguishable from countless other high school, college, and minor league team mascots.

I was there and it sucked. Not worth remembering or commemorating. It fact, it was so bad that the World's Fair has never come back to the United States since.

If you ask for a sign, you will receive a sign, but sometimes the sign is not the one you asked for

I'm sending you this static decal of Whatizit, the mascot of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Who would enforce the Trademark? Didn’t the group go bankrupt?

What's weird is that I did not attend. Young FCP was a prepubescent only child whose parents were strict fundamentalists. Things like going to New Orleans to attend a fair were not allowed. Plus, we had friends who did attend and got their 1984 Cadillac stolen. We did pass through NO en route to Venice a couple of times during the event, and obviously we saw this sign all around the state.

Despite not attending, this sign is a unique piece, and it would make me happy to see it on my office wall daily. Not $1,400 worth of happiness, but a couple of hundred worth for sure.

I have a bit more fonder memories I suppose, but didn’t it basically kill the whole concept of ‘World Fairs’ altogether?

Also, I think trademark and copyright laws only apply if you're selling or making money off a product. If you're just making one copy of something to hang on your wall you should be good.
