A lot of people are zombies behind the wheel and will follow whatever the car in front of them is doing.

Most people in the cars have not heard of the internet meme zipper merge. They know the right lane is closed so they got to the left and then stopped at a red light. A zipper would have solved nothing. It’s still the same number of cars backed up behind a red light. The other people didn’t use the closed lane to skip ahead simply because that makes them an a-hole and someone may not let then back in. The guy videoing is just ok with it and got an easy opportunity

If half of those cars were in the right lane, it would be the exact same wait as if all cars were in the left lane.
So while correct, if everyone did it, you wouldn't save any time, because people can't zipper merge. So you actually don't want them to figure this out.
Essentially, it doesn't matter. You aren't smart doing the zipper merge, you're just unnecessarily taking advantage of an unnecessary situation.

It’s not a zipper if every imbecile lines up for half a mile.
Also, It’s another thing if you’re trying to find a gap and there really just isn’t one.. So you keep on driving down.
Like I said I’ll usually let that person in cause I’m not a dick trying to hold up traffic, but many people wouldn’t.

LADOTD recommends the frick you merge

zipper merge or no?
If:
-life was a video game or a book or a simulation of sorts, or
-each and every driver was all playing by the same thoughts and rules,
then unequivocally YES.
Unfortuantely, none of the above is reality. So my answer is NO. You saw that sign that said "lane closed, get over" same as I did. So when you say "frick it" and drive all the way until the last millimeter then cutoff the guy in front of you to merge, frick you. And don't give me the "hey, I'm just zipper merging brah!" line. The minority female on her cell phone or tyrone in the charger have never even heard of a zipper merge much less know what it is, so I know for damn sure they aren't trying to operate for some greater good. They're being selfish pricks is all. I'll let people in front of me for a brief time, but when we're close enough to where I can visually see the merge point, I will put my front bumper into the car in front of me's backseat if I have to, you are not getting in front of me.

I can say this, the idiots in line at Costco on a Saturday afternoon do not care for my zipper merge program.

This.
It's human decency thing. Like taking the shopping cart to a stall or reclining your seat on airplanes.

Everyone that says this isn't a proper zipper is incorrect. This is correct, everyone in line is the problem, the driver in the merge lane is the only one demonstrating a functioning brain. If people simultaneously followed his lead, there would be some outlet valve for traffic as they increase the usage of available road.

It's not clicking for them. Instead of merging where the taper in the construction zone guides you to, they've artificially moved back the merge point to where they think it's "fair" to merge. So now people get in line earlier, moving the "fair" point even further back. It's the equivalent of stopping in a roundabout to let someone who's waiting enter because you think they've been sitting for a while and "that just ain't right"
Posted on 7/20/26 at 6:23 pm to Wolfhound45
I think it depends especially with construction. But I think it's up to the lane ending person to make the move and not cause a wreck.
If I'm on the interstate and you are flying in the left lane that ends, why should I have to do anything for your ending lane?

Nothing is gained time wise for the whole group using a zipper merge due to the red light.

I'm not sure why it's so difficult to understand that this position is demonstrably false.

I paid for that lane. I’m using it.
I cannot understand why people think it helps traffic to go ahead and create one long line.
Because idiots still rubberneck at construction and wrecks.

Real question:
If it pisses you off so much that people pass you and merge in ahead of you, why do you wait in the long line instead of joining the open lane and merging faster?

Show your work.
The light is 100 feet away. If you actually follow traffic laws and maintain an assured clear distance, zipper merging does nothing in this situation.
If this was a freeway with a blocked lane, I 100% agree.

This took seven separate consultants fifteen and a half years to come up with….
And then they just plagiarized it from Iowa’s DOT.

Well your way just turns a one lane highway for 1 mile into 2 miles or whatever long. It just makes a bad situation worse.
