What she said sounds like the car salesman who has to run it by the manager. Side note: At least she did not say she thought it would make the manager mad.

It’s perfectly clear what the OP did, I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to grasp it.
OP, one variable I can think of is that at such a large volume you might be entitled to a bit of a discount.

That doesn't take an hour to calculate. Hell, I did it while typing this response without a calculator.

Did you not think that it's possible the lady answering the phone might not be able to approve or estimate?

If a person calls my office and asks for a roof, gutter, flooring, etc price, she might know the price but she isn't the one that's giving a random call in the price/quote. Often times we are out of the office and can't get back with a person asap.

No business gives a shite about your AI and how quick it works. normal businesses don't oeprate off a random customers AI.

Buying a fairly large amount of lumber. Called the sawmill, asked board foot pricing, said I'll call back in five minutes with total order.

Open chatgpt, enter boards and bf pricing. Tell it to calculate qty and list based off dimensions and 5% waste.

Call back with qty of each board under 2 minutes later. Girl says she'll call back with a quote... So I tell her, it's 4276.36. I'd like to pay.

Says she'll call back. That was 1 hour and 18 minutes ago.

If you're too lazy to make a spreadsheet, at least use AI.

So you're the guy that calls and expects an entire company to come to a halt until your question is answered.

$4200 dollars worth of lumber is not a very large package. They may require an internal discussion weither to give you the retail price or contractor. Try Home Depot or Loews

The AI was simply being used as a calculator.

One would think she would have:
A spreadsheet
A calculator
A pen and paper
A fricking abacus...

.

One would think you would understand you're talking to a low level employee. knowing the price per ft ddoesn not mean she can give quotes.

Are you illiterate? I called and asked her for board foot pricing on each.

You should learn to write and give all the the info. Your OP mentions nothing of the fact that she actually gave you BF price, it says….

She's likely one of four employees and sounds like she's been smoking cigarettes since the Carter Administration.

If you are dealing with the people who cut the wood, you might want to let them talk.
I was ordering cherry to make book cases. For raw lumber I was quoted x for a thousand board feet. They also said if I needed/ could use 3000 board feet the price would be 1/3 x. And they deliver free.

We have a barn, we air dried the 3000 board feet and have the book cases as well as my kitchen cabinets all made from good solid cherry. And we still have several hundred board feet we keep finding uses for.

So a low level employee, got it.

Congrats on using ChatGPT as a calculator though, it really saved the day for you.

If I tell you I need 360 board feet of 1x6x12, and you've told me the board foot pricing, then your righting it down would be: 360 @5.15 = 1854.

So then why did you use AI? You don't have a calculator?

Maybe when she dropped the order into her system it triggered some price breaks and she needed to wait for someone with the proper authorizations to override the system to quote you the higher price that you demanded

Most likely, if she's answering the phone, she may not be allowed to sign off on quotes and the person that does that was tied up. Her F* up, if this is true, is giving you a short time frame in which you were expecting a call back.
