Buying a fairly large amount of lumber. Called the sawmill, asked board foot pricing, said I'll call back in five minutes with total order.

Open chatgpt, enter boards and bf pricing. Tell it to calculate qty and list based off dimensions and 5% waste.

Call back with qty of each board under 2 minutes later. Girl says she'll call back with a quote... So I tell her, it's 4276.36. I'd like to pay.

Says she'll call back. That was 1 hour and 18 minutes ago.

If you're too lazy to make a spreadsheet, at least use AI.

So you're one of those people who just googles shite and then automatically trusts that their AI is giving you the gospel truth and all the information you need?

Nice.

But you just assumed what their pricing is?

I mean, I wish we could all do that on all sorts of things but I think her checking with her sales people to get the correct pricing is fair.

What am I missing?

A ton of people really just blindly accept what AI says.

In this example, there's someone who really thinks AI is capable of knowing a company's pricing better than the company rep he's talking to.

Hell why did you even call in the first place? If ChatGPT told you the board feet and the price you should have just went up there and paid it and picked it up. That's clearly how business operate right? Just using a random Joe Blow's AI calculations and pricing.

Are you illiterate?

I called and asked her for board foot pricing on each.

I'm not buying a 2x4 with a price of 3.28, I'm buying lumber with a board foot price of 5.15.

There is no variation.

Meaning, whether you use a calculator, a spreadsheet, or a pencil and paper, the number will all be the same.

I occasionally get calls like this at work. I dont ignore them because its not in my nature, but they dont get my undivided attention either. Once they start trying to educate me on how my own stuff works, ill let them know that they clearly dont need my help, and they'll hang up soon after.

Board foot price usually varies by the dimensions.

Ie a 16' 2x6 used to be the lowest cost per board foot dimensional lumber you could buy but that may have changed.

So you offered a price and she is considering your offer? Why are you upset?

...I understand some of you appear to be functionally illiterate, however that is indeed exactly how board foot pricing works.

If I tell you I need 360 board feet of 1x6x12, and you've told me the board foot pricing, then your righting it down would be: 360 @5.15 = 1854.

That doesn't take an hour to calculate. Hell, I did it while typing this response without a calculator.

this goes both ways. Lots of older people can’t seem to fathom the level of intelligence AI is. It’s beyond their scope

AI isn't full proof, but it has a pretty high rate of accurate response. It's basically an expert in everything. For minor medical issues, you don't even have to spend time waiting at the clinic and paying a copay. You just ask AI. It's pretty neat. If they start letting AI issue prescriptions and order tests, it's going to put a lot of doctors out of business.

You're smarter than this. I called and got the board foot pricing for each type of board. 1x6x8, 1x6x10, 1x6x12.

If a 1x6x10 is 5.15 a board foot. And I need 360 board feet. What is 360x5.15?

More importantly, would it take you an hour to calculate that?

If it would, please use floaties and a snorkel when you eat soup.

And the mill could be long on some stuff they need to un-arse from. They could be short on some stuff temporarily. Sales could have an order that no body ever came and got that they need to get off the yard. Delivery or pick up? There could be a few regular customers ahead of you that they want to get orders set for before they can work your quote up. There’s a few factors that go into a large order that the lady working the desk who gave you the basic $/board foot doesn’t know about that whoever is in sales does.
