Dude where are you from? There are literally hundreds of these rats in a canal 100 yards from these peoples house and millions probably in this state. What do you think one family keeping one is going to matter?
Yes, I know. I grew up in JP and saw plenty of nutria in the drainage canals. I know JPSO used to do nutria control at night shooting them with suppressors in the Metairie drainage canals and along the levees by the Jean Lafitte Preserve

I was replying to a question asking why nutrias are different from a guinea pig and aren’t allowed to be kept as pets

My first post in this thread said that maybe LDWF could issue them a permit to keep it. I agree with you it probably could’ve been handled pretty easily with a phone call from LDWF ahead of time

But can’t a person get a permit from LDWF to kill all the nutria you can and get $5 per tail ?

This was a manufactured media event created by local media.

Oh look at the heart warming pet nutria story

ONOZ big bad govt coming in to get the nutria

Wait a minute, big bad govt caved and they get to keep it. Oh great it’s a happy ending after all.

Here's the thing - all law enforcement officers and their superiors, and even THEIR superiors, have a level of discretion they can operate within.

You ever been pulled over and let off with a warning? The officer understood the circumstances and just said something like "I'm writing you a warning today, just slow down a little. Okay?" Despite the fact that you were breaking the law by speeding, that officer used his own judgement to let you off the hook after determining the circumstances for himself.

That's called discretion, and every LEO in every situation is able to apply it accordingly to the cursumstances at hand.

These LDWF agents could've easily just left the owners with a "warning" to fill out the proper paperwork by X date or they'll be back

And that's exactly what happened:

quote:

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has worked out an agreement which will allow the New Orleans couple to keep its pet nutria.

LDWF Sec. Jack Montoucet said Friday the owners have applied for a permit and that LDWF has provided special conditions under which the nutria can remain with his owners.

How hard was that to just do from the beginning? Now they've just made themselves look like assholes that are only understanding when there's public outcry and 17,000 people against them.

Actually I think they had to get the message out that people SHOULD NOT make a nutria their pet. Let’s not forget local media just made this nutria a celebrity with a story about how great of a pet this nutria was. If LDWF just quietly gives this family a permit then and don’t get the message out to others to stop adopting nutrias as pets then more people might start adopting the damn things.

Sometimes people have to look like an a-hole and make tough decisions. LDWF knows that they don’t want the public to have nutria as pets (for good reason) so make a big fuss to get the word out that it is wrong but then back down and allow the family to keep their pet as long as they get a permit and follow basic rules that go along with it. People already probably don’t like LDWF so does it really matter if people are pissed at them.

Yes, I’m sure if this one more was turned loose it would be the tipping point resulting in an ecological disaster.

I still can’t get over the fact that the guy brought this giant rodent to his seafood business!

Customer: Yeah I would…WTH IS THAT A GIANT RAT OUT BACK?!?!?

Clerk: oh no that our pet nutria, Neuty. He is real nice.

Customer: oh ok. 10lb of boiled crawfish please.

Not a problem when the family pet is well taken care of and safely contained, but when they escape or the owner turns them loose for whatever reason, they cause problems for the local ecosystem that may not be easily fixed. See Florida with all the invasive reptile problems due to pet owners releasing their exotic snakes when they got too big.

Maybe LDWF can inspect the home and the cage its kept in and give some sort of special permit to let them keep it. But there’s a good reason why certain animals aren’t allowed to be kept as pets. The idiots who don’t secure their animals or turn them loose when keeping the pet becomes inconvenient ruin it

This ship has sailed

You will never get that pop under control unless you would develop a poison that only kills Nutria

The nutria bounty isn't paying enough for people to go catch them

same with alligators - eventhough not invasive their pop is out of control because their hides and meat isn't worth anyhting

Bears are already out of control in NELA and the state won't do anything about them

Same with apple snails

This whole Neuty deal could literally be an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm

It all starts with Jeff and Larry trying out a new seafood place and they look outback and see a giant rodent running around. Larry freaks out and tells the clerk and they respond saying it’s fine bc it’s their pet.

Larry storms out and after some funny banter between him and Jeff, reports the restaurant to the authorities.

Authorities come it and take the rodent and threaten to euthanize it. Obviously the family is distraught and then the community rallies around them.

Larry intervenes saying you do realize that this is a food business and there is a giant RAT running around. Everyone gets pissed at Larry and the authorities decide to give the rodent back.

Larry leaves disgusted but as he is driving away, the rodent wriggles free from his owner and wanders into the street where he is promptly run over by Larry (Bumm Bumm Baaa… theme music kicks in)

Obviously I took a little poetic license at the end.

Man you are taking this way too seriously. It’s a primarily a boiled seafood market. Smell of fish, shrimp, crawfish everywhere and probably a pretty unclean scene in the back where the action happens. That’s where Neuty spent most of his time.
It seems that the customers that knew about it loved the nutria and as evidence from the outcry, nobody gave a damn that the owner brought his pet to the seafood market where all orders are to go.

I’m familiar with the business though I still would’ve thought having your pet rodent on premise would be against some kind of health codes.

I get that it’s probably no different than having the owners dog out back but it just feels wrong having a giant rat running around a place that sells food.

Also I don’t believe the only reason it’s illegal to have as a pet is bc it’s invasive. I thought it more had to do with it generally being a wild animal and you really shouldn’t make a wild animal a pet. For example, can you have a raccoon or a bobcat as a pet? They aren’t invasive but I just kind of assumed that you couldn’t make one of those your pet even if you found it as a baby and raised it.

you are equating “rat” generally assumed to be a Norwegian rat with a nutria which is not at all the same thing. They are both rodents but so are squirrels, beavers, etc

not saying any of them are good pets but that doesn’t mean nutria are any particular health hazard and they keep it in a cage at work.

dogs on a patio are more of a health hazard than a rat in a cage

fine use of taxpayer money. Love the bit about being dressed in tactical and then getting aggressive with the home owners because the nutria wasnt home...fukn clowns.

Not one bit surprised, after all one agent in particular had nothing to do but ticket people riding 4 wheelers on a dirt road.

They caved because it was spiraling into a PR disaster. This story looks like a waste of the taxpayers' money- because it was. There are other divisions of the LDWF that would love to get a larger slice of the money enforcement gets. Ask some of those guys who work the WMAs about this. Off the record, of course. They are very few and have to fight for their resources to keep things suitable for the public.
