I’m sure someone has already pointed out these sensationalist lines.

It has been.

On the other hand, this is a story about a family doing something without a permit that they can legally do with a permit.

That situation could be handled with mail, maybe a few phone calls and an office appointment. But instead a few government agents showed up to a private business with guns and handcuffs on their belt demanding property. That behavior and presentation 100% flows from the belief that we are dominant and you are subservient.

This may be their normal attire, but for the government to dispatch armed personnel to disrupt the lives of private citizens, the circumstances better be abnormal and urgent.

It’s a show of force to dissuade folk from harboring illegal nutria.

Nola. Com ran a big feel good story about this the day before. LDWF came the next day and TP staff photographers were on site to document it. Nola . Com then ran the story on the nutria getting taken away.

Part of me thinks Nola tipped off LDWF in order to not only get a feel good story that the public likes but ALSO a sad story that the public likes. LDWF may have essentially needed to do something bc it was out in the media that a nutria was a pet and also at the family restaurant.

If the family keeps this whole thing quiet then none of this happens but a story was made so now LDWF no longer has plausible deniability. Honestly think the media used the family for clicks.

Ok a place of business where food is served.

Point being is that people should think twice about agreeing to put something out on social media. If Nola doesn’t run the feel good story about this nutria, the family would still have the nutria.

Is Neuty fixed? Then his name takes on a whole new meaning.

Hell, if some Louisiana politicians and authorities can get away with corruption and major infractions all the damn time since forever, what harm is it to let Neuty and the Lacostes live in peace as they have for many years?

Why does the family not go to the swamp and find a stray nutria to pawn off as Neuty?

Honestly this is somewhat important IMO. Friend of mine raised an orphan baby raccoon. As a juvenile he was a great pet but once it became an adult certain hormones/instincts I guess kicked in and it became aggressive at times so much so that he eventually let it go in the woods. Point is wild animals are gonna wild animal.

Because Neuty was raised by them since they found him when he was an orphaned, injured baby, and as such is totally domesticated. Rides in the car, swims in the pool, loves to be petted and carried, and is housebroken.

That won't work with a nutria who grew up in the wild. They want to bite you and fight you.

I would just argue the “totally domesticated” part. Dogs, cats, and other common pets have been bred over many decades to be domesticated. This animal still theoretically has its wild instincts. If I raised a baby raccoon from birth, I still would be concerned letting that thing near my kids when it’s an adult. I don’t really see a nutria being much different. I would think a 22 lb nutria could mess up a kid if it got pissed off.

Save Neuty Petition

I signed it. As a law enforcement officer myself, I'd never agree to take part in taking these people's family pet - against the law or not.

I'd tell my superiors that I showed up to the address and the owners confirmed that the pet had passed away a couple days ago, sorry not sorry.

This is just wrong. Who cares if it's typically against the law to have a nutria, this is a clear case where an exception should be made

I hear you but what if Neuty bit someone after LDWF allowed it to stay bc this situation was “different”?

The big mistake was telling the world you were doing something that you probably shouldn’t be doing according to the laws on the book. I think most would agree the law isn’t really the problem here.

At the end of the day I wonder if more people will have the Neuty Petition than the Noonie Petition.

Here's the thing - all law enforcement officers and their superiors, and even THEIR superiors, have a level of discretion they can operate within.

You ever been pulled over and let off with a warning? The officer understood the circumstances and just said something like "I'm writing you a warning today, just slow down a little. Okay?" Despite the fact that you were breaking the law by speeding, that officer used his own judgement to let you off the hook after determining the circumstances for himself.

That's called discretion, and every LEO in every situation is able to apply it accordingly to the cursumstances at hand.

These LDWF agents could've easily just left the owners with a "warning" to fill out the proper paperwork by X date or they'll be back

I don’t disagree but in this case they were essentially screaming from the rooftops that they were doing it. It’s not like they just randomly found out about it. I could see LDWF being pissed about the story basically saying how great a pet a nutria is.
