The Saints are exempt from paying sales taxes.

State owns the superdome via the LSED which is a state agency.
State hires and pays AMG Global (formerly SMG) to operate and run the Superdome.
Saints are the primary tenant. They pay a minimal lease payment (less than $1M a year). Saints get all of the naming rights money. Saints get a cut of concession and parking revenue.
The Saints pay no rent. The fact is the state pays the Saints millions a year to stay in NO.

So it’s good business to renovate the Dome and spend 300 million dollars of state dollars so you can create 300 to 500 million dollars in economic activity? I don’t think so.
Sorry but without New Orleans, Louisiana is basically Mississippi.
ETA: the state just spent 100 million on a Covid hospital that was used by about 1000 people.

I will never have an issue with a small amount of money to stadiums so they can be used in emergency situations, but we should be talking 5% max. This whole state/region paying for stadiums is just insane to me.

If it paid for itself they wouldn’t have to get tax dollars to renovate it.
The Sugar Bowl was here before the Dome was built. FF, and Super Bowl are infrequent events. They don’t occur every year.
But there’s no doubt that the Dome acts as a catalyst and fuel for the NO economy, and the Saints are NO’s pride and joy. Benson took every advantage of this and milked taxpayers for a sweetheart deal every chance he had. Now his estate is worth multi Billions of dollars.
This happened over decades and really NO is not better off than when it all began. Katrina, oil downturn, and other factors had a far greater factor than the Saints had on the local economy. The Saints are just a thin veneer over the economic decay. People love them and don’t want to lose them; thus the reason our government keeps paying a king’s ransom to keep them.
We can’t build bridges, highways or roads. Our universities need maintenance and funding. Teachers want raises. Major hurricanes just ravaged out state. We lack tax dollars to do all this. Now the Dome needs remodeling again.
Can’t you see why some are saying enough is enough.

The public shouldn't be paying for the NFLs' arenas. Enough is enough.
Right or not, the reality is that if the State isn't subsidizing the Saints, then the Saints don't stay in Louisiana.
So, the question isn't a philosophical one like a lot of people approach it. It's a question of, does that money the State is spending to subsidize the Saints (which you oppose) hurt you enough to offset the benefits of having an NFL franchise (both financial and quality of life).

With all the money spent on upgrades in recent years, probably could have had a brand new stadium by now.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the amount of money the State gets in income tax from having the Saints here.
The Saints are paying $100-200 million in salary to players and coaches every year. 6% income tax for the top bracket means $6-12 million annually. (Rough, un-researched numbers).

Exactly the point I am making. Even if it hurts in the short term, I think states would be better off just saying No.
We can't let it become a status symbol of a city/state on whether they have a team or not. Especially given the virtue signaling that the NFL has done lately.

It isn’t a business decision. The state loses money in the various deals with the Dome.
It’s really a philosophical decision as to what people want to have and enjoy with their tax dollars.
Schools, roads, bridges, parks, libraries, etc. all cost government. We decided long ago to spend tax money on all these things fir the public good. That’s how I see the Saints. People decided that we wanted the Saints so we built a stadium for them and one thing led to another and the subsidies grew and grew.
Sure we get some return on our investment, but it’s not nearly enough to say we turn a real profit from it.

The State collects income tax ftom the games played in the Dome from both teams. They do not collect income tax from away games.
But I read where the Pelicans take advantage of state rebates for jobs created. I do not know if the Saints do this too, but I would not be surprised.
