re: Lawmakers won't commit to $90M Superdome renovation deal

I get what you are saying but a 20 year old stadium is still paying for massive upgrades these days. The arms race between stadiums is insane, it’s been interesting to see colleges begin to pull back on expansions due to less in person attendees.

I am okay with the state keeping the Superdome current and updated. I don’t see the urgency of it needing to be funded this year though. Louisiana has a lot of pressing needs right now. The dome can wait a few more years.
Not okay with this though.
It’s 50 years old but it was renovated fairly recently. It’s not like the Saints are playing in a condemned building.

The fact is the state pays the Saints millions a year to stay in NO.

But I read where the Pelicans take advantage of state rebates for jobs created. I do not know if the Saints do this too, but I would not be surprised.
Wow, I didn't realize this. So basically all of the income tax generate by these teams probably goes back to the team. Even more fricky, the money is taken out of the players pay checks, but the team (Benson/stakeholders) gets the rebate.

Go woke, go broke. frick New Orleans.

And y’all are under the impression that if the money earmarked for the Saints was routed elsewhere it would go towards anything used to improve the state?

It’s a state-taxpayer subsidized business, but the benefit is almost entirely in hotel or sales taxes generated by the visitors that go to the games. So the tax revenue benefit is primarily local.
Which means it’s yet another state subsidy on a New Orleans amenity that serves as a thin veneer to mask the city’s rotten and decaying economic viability. Just because it’s a source of pride for New Orleans doesn’t mean the state taxpayers should subsidize the team directly.
That’s way, way beyond paying to keep the superdome updated.
New Orleans is one of the smallest markets for the NFL. And it’s probably the poorest as well. Maybe it’s time to let the Saints go.

The New Orleans Pelicans receive a $3.65 million cash rebate every year from Louisiana — more than any other company — by counting the team's professional basketball players’ positions as newly created direct jobs under the state’s Quality Jobs program, an economic incentive that’s supposed to encourage companies to create high-paying, full-time jobs for residents.

The state taxpayers foot the bill for a lot of inappropriate things. Subsidizing professional sports teams so New Orleans can still appear to be economically competitive is one of the more glaring examples of state lawmaker’s misplaced priorities.
Keeping the dome updated is not an inappropriate expectation though. That’s reasonable, although I don’t think that funding a major renovation is so urgent that it must be done this year. The dome was updated recently; another update can wait a year or two.

This reminds me of a discussion I had years ago with a supporter of EWE. I asked her how could she vote for EWE, a crooked politician. She responded, I know he’s a crook with his hand in the cookie jar, but when he puts his hand in the cookie jar and then pulls it out some of the money might fall out on the table and I will get some.
So yes, maybe if the state spent the 90 million elsewhere then we’d see something nice up here in BR or maybe Shreveport or Bunkie.
The problem is Benson did such a great job of blackmailing the state people hardly understand or know about all the deals he received. There’s no end to it either. At least lawmakers brought attention to the situation so others got “educated”.

That’s a slick term for adding more suites, box seats and amenities do the Saints can charge more.
Now I’m sure there are some real upgrades too, but don’t think for a moment it’s all vital.

WTH?
Pretty sure South and North Carolina are in the south. And before y’all go all Nc IsNt ThE sOuTh, Outside of Charlotte and the research triangle of NC, the rest of the state is indistinguishable from any other region of the Deep South.

Stop giving our tax money to Gayle Benson and Caesar's. If they can't pay for their own upgrades, frick'em.

My problem with this whole deal is that the state agreed to contribute $90M and now they are backing out. Typical LA politics.
A past legislature agreed. Every couple years there is a new legislature. The current representative body of Louisiana residents should have the say. Conditions change. Interests change. Attitudes change. It's not like a private contractual business deal.
A growing number of Louisianans are becoming less interested/invested in the Saints and the NFL, regardless of anything Gayle Benson wants.

This is an increasingly untrue statement except for the "New Orleans is a great boutique city" crowd.
New Orleans is becoming less and less economically beneficial to the state.

Yeah because this is priority in this state. screw the saints and the superdome.

Amazingly, this is the laziest argument in this whole thread.
