They put in a lot of effort to get Zelinsky. Four squads of elite soldiers including Chechnians we’re dispatched within the first few weeks. FSB GRU higher ups tipped their hand and all four squads were “liquidated” some within 30 mins of setting foot on Ukrainian soil others within a KM of the headquarters of the president. This information was given to a friendly third country who informed in great detail the plots. Some of the folks who oversaw the info leak have been jailed or had heart attacks.

At this point, Russia has much to loose by expanding the war, but Putin has nothing to loose. As long as Putin is in charge without a hint of victory, the possibility of a wider war with NBC elements increases. Anything that looks like defeat will be the provocation he needs to escalate.

It does appear that Putin has some sort of pathological need to be seen as a successful military conqueror. Hopefully someone on the inside will end Putin's personal involvement in Russian government.
